Photography using drone...

I'm curious about photography using drones as a medium. Drones nowadays are getting popular specially in photography and video. I have seen shots using drones in nuptials and scenery. Have anyone of you tried this technology?  Can you tell me about cost and other details? Any comments is greatly appreciated.

First you need a drone with camera you can buy one in Amazon for about $50 practice with it first before buying better models like Spark which costs about $500 it weighs less than 300 grams and is DJI's (world renowned maker of drones) latest entry level drone.

Thanks @Kakashi, $500 i think its a fair price for a good quality drone. But what do you think about photography with drones? Photographers before have to ride helicopters and other lite aircraft just to have aerial shots and terrain /landscape shots. It seemed that those days are coming to a fade.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Kakashi2020
Well those chopper riding days are gone forever, replaced by a cheap drone, my brother has one, well it's a cheap small one which he uses to take group photos. His over head shots are quite good, he just edits it afterwards. It can hover for about 30 feet and costs only $40. It's quite small though, but it does the job.

Those days are definitely coming to an end, actually, it probably has come to an end already unless the directory/photographer needs a picture from an extremely high altitude. I've already noticed that a lot of photos and scenes (especially from music videos) have been taken from drones so it's no surprise really.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

kammy143
True. Those days are gone when too much hassle of getting permits, preparing paperworks and allotting a lot of money just to get a good aerial shot. This is why I thing there are lots of people who tend to invest in drones. YouTubers, Videographers and even people who just want to explore their video and skills to a whole different level.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

fishbate
I agree, and of course let's not forget the danger of riding helicopters just to take a shot. Although the thrill would be a different in a way when using drones, but its better to be safe than sorry.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

DarthHazard
The thing is that this is actually starting to become a thing because there has been a lot of events where drones have actually been close to crashing into planes which has caused the government to start to come up with laws to stop this happening. So sooner or later, even people using drones might have to start getting permits.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

vinaya
There was a time when aerial photography was reserved to many prevailing ones. You had to get in a plane or helicopter to take aerial photographs. The advancements in technology have made aerial photography simpler, cheaper. These days you can get a drone for around $300 and explore your desire to take aerial photographs.

Someone should have invented drone photography a long time ago. Would you believe that a decade or so ago people rented out choppers just to get overhead videos and photos. The manpower and equipment needed cost thousands of dollars unlike nowadays you can either buy a drone or rent one to shoot some videos or photos for a small fraction of the cost of renting a chopper and pilot.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Thanks for the suggestion to buy a cheaper one first to practice. That way you can be more confident while controlling the more expensive one. You'll also be free to make fatal mistakes during your practice because you feel free and without the worry that what you're driving is a disposable one.

I bought one in Lazada during their sale the other day and it's quite small and can fly for about 10 meters. I and my kids are having fun with it. It only cost me $14 now that's cheap, well it's Lazada's Anniversary Sale and all. But it does have a problem it's cheap because the camera is very low at 3mp.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

EfficientNinja
That's really cheap! Is Lazada's Anniversary sale over? I might have to get one myself and just play with it. I like playing RC cars with my dad when I was a kid. I might get two for old time's sake. I'll be racing cheap camera drones with dad. Photography using drone...

kammy143
Another problem with cheap drones is having controlling difficulty and also the distance to which you can control it is limited. It is also not for heavy duty stuff.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

kammy143
Drones are great because it lets you capture footage that comes in a hefty cost back in the days. Now, videographers are very lucky with the technology has offered a real good alternative which is cost effective and can be done effortlessly. Drones a really come in handy in taking a good amount of aerial shots with good quality and doesn't require too much of a fuzz when it comes to paperwork compared to before. Like you, I agree in investing in a good quality drone. I for one wouldn't really want to buy cheap drones with questionable performance. It may cost you to loose some or maybe all of your important footages.

I feel like one should also include a drone operatot. If you want the best shot you will need the assistance of someone that knows what they are doing and not just any amateur. This is if the project is pretty serious but if it is for fun then one can operate the drone by themselves.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

fishbate
That's true, that's why you need a license to operate one. If you think of professionals, those drone operators are highly skilled in terms of control and accuracy. That's why you see some footage that are really in high quality compared to other freelance operators.

I think photography using drone is getting popular today. I like shots of drones. It can go higher and take some shots. No human being can do what drones do. Thanks for the person who invented drones. Photography is put in a higher level.

Great topic picked for discussion. Drones do for aerial photography what aquacolor does for underwater photography. It is an amazing invention at an amazingly affordable price. Considering what a drone can do, $500 is a steal!

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I've seen it being used in movies and TV shows. I think it adds a sort of bird's eye view of a scenery. I like how we can see things from a special view. Now we don't have to solely rely on graphics animation for shots like this.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

That's true, drones also have stabilizers attached to the camera that can reduce movements and shattering while taking shots. I have seen these toys work and some of them are specially made for different weather systems.

I think it is especially useful when making videos near the beach. It should be useful especially for action movies that are filmed in the air. I've also seen some documentaries of daredevils that utilizes drones to make their films.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

True. Now they can get their perfect shots without too much hassle. It's a great development for recording devices. I actually saw scenes from movies that looked like they used drones. They really are used for stunts.

I have never tried it although I have always been interested in getting a drone just to play around with. In terms of getting photography, there are quite a lot of drones that can do this but the ones with good enough cameras to get a high quality photograph will be quite expensive. You can find quite a lot of them available on Amazon although I'm not sure what the exact prices will be.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Tronia
Yes, if you just want a drone to mess around with you can quite easily find cheap ones in the price range of like $30-50. Those are great for beginners and to just see how controlling a drone feels like. I have one of those with a small camera and it's great fun!

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

DenisP
I had no idea that the price range can go so low! I always expected that even the cheapest drone would probably be at least above the $200 price range or so. I'm totally tempted to get a drone now! I love playing flight simulators on my computer so it would be kind of cool to get a taste of operating some sort of aircraft in real life.

After a quick search on Amazon, one of the first links is a drone that only costs $130 and actually has a 720p camera on it. As a starter drone, that doesn't seem like that bad of an investment at all.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

aeon
I'm also interested in drone, but not for photography, just to play around. I think it's really cool to have that toy, and instead of photography, I will use that for video, but actually it doesn't matter if drone has camera or not, I just want to use that as a toy. Photography using drone...

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Steve5
I know how you feel. I feel like originally, it sort of gave people the impression of a toy helicopter. It was the closest thing we could think of before realizing its usefulness it filming and photography.

I have never owned a drone, therefore, I do not have any experience with drone photography. However, I am thinking to get a drone for a long time. My primary purpose of buying a drone is to shooting ariel video and taking ariel pictures. I have checked the price od drones on ebay and Amazon, it cost anywhere between $200 to $1000. I will get a drone once I have saved enough.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Tronia
First of all, if you're serious about this and want really good pictures taken with your drone, you will need to invest quite some money. If it's more like a hobby then you can easily buy mid-range drones with a decent camera, battery life and just go for it.

But in order to do the photography that you see in movies, the internet, etc., you should be looking to buy drones such as the DJI Phantom 4 PRO Professional Drone, DJI Mavic Pro and similar. They cost a lot though. The reason for that is the overall camera quality, the actual life of the battery, the speed at which the drone can fly, other good features.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

DenisP
"...if you're serious about this and want really good pictures taken with your drone, you will need to invest quite some money."

I seriously agree with this statement, 100%. As drones have gotten more popular, a lot of really cheap alternatives have been available on the market. However, much like with most technological equipment, cutting costs is also going to be massively cutting your quality. If you're taking photos or videos professionally, then it is definitely worth investing in a more expensive model with the best camera quality available. If you create content for YouTube, for example, getting some high quality drone shots--preferably in 4K, or at the least 1080p--can really up the production value of your videos.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

fishbate
That's true , the quality of the shots still depends on the camera attached to the drone. I have a friend that modify drone attachments and he told me most of the time they attached high powered camera and lenses ,then they develop a control mechanism for them to acquire the control features wireless. He said that sometimes the cost of modifying is much more expensive than the drone itself.
.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Chinet23
You can still tell the work of the professional when it comes to drone shots. Novices may be able to pull it off but it will pale in comparison to the professionals as they both have the skill and the right equipment. They won't be called pro for no reason. When you mentioned that the cost of modifying is much more expensive than the drone itself, then it only means this is even more expensive than what I think it already is.

I'm getting interested in drones I'll buy one with out camera for $20 and see how it goes. I saw this model and it's just a small one for $18, I've ordered it already.

Oh my, this is my dream gadget. I haven't tried using a drone but when I'm watching some vloggers on YouTube using a drone in their adventures it's really amazing to see shots in the air. There is a cheaper price in the market but the quality is low so might as well buy that has a good quality so your money will be worthy buying the drone. You can check Amazon for what kind of drone you like and what suits your budget.

I think using drone in photography will give you better angle but not a great shot, and this is for photographers who love natures as their subject. I think if you're photographer and you want to use this drone, you should consider the background and not only your subject.

Personally, in case I need it with short notice, I would definitively rent a drone service. First, I've never had a drone, don't know how to drive it, and in case someone let me use his drone, I don't want to break it. Second, I'm not very experienced on photography, so I better leave it to professionals, specially If that's a special occasion, and I want everything looks really good. I guess that service must be expensive, don't have an idea about it, but based on the fact that I can make a huge mess doing it by myself, that would be the best thing to do.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

fishbate
That's quite true, there is actually a license issued before you can fly a drone. There also a school for it, there's also limitation in range and capabilities. Drone services usually work on land mapping and for scientific research. But for enthusiast i don't think you need to avail these services.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I think it really depends on the place where you are going to use it. Anyways, if so I guess it will do no harm to have a license for it.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Well that's true. Is not like you're going to use a drone around The White House, you have to know where and when to use it. Also, I totally agree with politics and rules about drones, there has to be a line for everything, otherwise you will have no privacy at all, starting with my sneaky neighbors that want to know it all.

In my country drones is also used to monitor suspects or criminals before the Policeman enters the area, some incidents is they are using drones to watch the area in advance before executing their arrest plan. I think it is right for you to follow the advice of our friends here that you will start to use cheaper drones you can check out on Amazon to view the complete details of product. So that you can estimate your budget and know the capacity of drones to be applicable in your plans where you want to use your drones. Because each of them has different range and quality of camera, so you should be the one to choose what suits your needs.

In that case, Drone is really helpful I hope in our country do the same things. But right now, our country implemented that drone is illegal to use in some certain public place, and I you want to use your drone, you have the proper documents and license, yeah, that's right, license.

I have friends who do photography while traveling. They have a high-end drone with a camera and they take awesome videos using it. I bet they are also really good at video editing to make those kinds of videos.

She is also rich that's why they can afford those kinds of gadgets. It's good that she uses it to make content and that could be a source of income for her if ever she decides to monetize her talent.

I think soon, maybe in a couple of years, everyone would have drones it's because right now drone prices are dropping and it's cameras are constantly getting better. I've been looking at online prices and I saw several under $50 which has 720p res cameras and others even have it in hd. Right now big drones are better because it can be equipped with bigger cameras and it can fly at a much higher altitude than small drones, but in several years time I really think that big drones would be obsolete and small drones will rule.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

DenisP
Man I'm so envious of people who have drones with high quality cameras. It's relatively cheap to buy a standard drone these days, but a lot of the cheaper options don't really have the camera quality I'm looking for. I don't think I would use it for photography so much as I would for film, and because of this I feel like anything less than 1080p quality at 60 FPS is just a waste of money. So many YouTube vloggers these days get really nice drone shots for their videos, and they honestly up the production value of their videos by a lot.

I have never tried using a drone for photography but I think it is a unique one because I had never heard this before. It might really be expensive but I am sure it is a fun way of doing photography in a new sense. Drones are especially helpful in getting different angles and views, in areas or spaces where humans can't go or would risk their lives if they went. So yes, drones can be extremely useful in photography.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

fishbate
Yes, i was also surprised by the angle they make during shots. The quality differs from what camera you are using. Also some drones uses stabilizing technology attached to the camera to eliminate blur from sudden movements.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Yeah, this drone is very useful for selfie addicts, they don't need to risk their lives for better angle anymore. Having a great profile picture in some social media accounts is really dangerous, and sometimes needs to invest big amounts for that. Yeah, it's a very useful piece of technology especially if you're adept at using it to give an overview of an island, for example during your holiday trips. It's a great way of making something that was mainly for military use to fit the needs of the public.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I haven't bought one but I can say that drones are really really helpful especially for photographers/film makers who does not have a very big budget. Before, only big production companies can take aerial shots because of the expensive price of renting a helicopter, getting a lot of permits, and etc. Now, using helicopters is not a thing anymore or somehow not a common thing anymore especially that having a drone is much more preferred by photographers/film makers because of it's price and it's durability.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

It seems that small drones are the way to go because it's inexpensive and quite cheap the problem is cheap drones has cheap cameras so you have to modify and change it, and when it comes to flying, cheap drones can fly between 20 to 50 feet, that's actually good enough for me.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

fishbate
There's actually a modification kit that is available on the market. Also you can do a DIY if you have the skill. Some modifications only include an anti glare and auto balancing module which you can add to your camera. I don't have an idea on the cost, but i think it's a good way to upgrade your Drone features.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I think buying a Mini drone is the right way to go. It's energy efficient, can be charged by a simple smartphone charget, it's small and compact, you can bring it anywhere. It's also pretty affordable, you can buy a good one for $50, but you really need to do some modifications with regards to its cameras. The way I see it the buying good cameras are more expensive than the drone itself, but if you're an enthusiast spending $100 in its modification and upgrade is a small price to pay.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

fishbate
I agree a mini drone is a good starter specially for those exploring drone photography. Also its a good way to practice control and shots, Although the range is limited, modification is still available. It really depends on the budget. I guess it depends on the skill level and the passion, buying is easy when you got the passion for it, regardless of the cost.

I think investing in a drone is good if you are in photography. Personally, I am amazed with videos from drones. Popular vloggers in Youtube use drones and they are amazingly doing a great job in editing with their shots from drones. Seeing the nature around made me amaze of all the creatures God has done. Drones are the best man. Go invest in it.

Drones are really great in photography since you will just let it in the sky to fly without thinking of the danger in riding to a helicopter during those times when drones are not yet invented or is available for use. It might cost a few dollars but I think it is really worth the price since it can can capture the greatest photos of your life which is really great and amazing.

I agree, an addition is the ability of drones to be stable on flight. This technology also helps in the quality of shots. There are also drones that can enable hover mode which enables it to follow a pattern, i guess technology nowadays really helps even people who are just starting specially in photography,

Drones are not cheap at all.
A good drone can cost you somewhere from +1000 EUR to 3000 EUR.Of course, there are more far expensive ones but a good starter drone will cost you somewhere around the price i mentioned. You also need a license to control one.I don't know the cost for the license but it isn't cheap I think.
Drone photography is popular and can be paid a lot, although a lot people are doing it,it might be harder to find a good job for doing it as there are many drone photographers out there.

It is very visually attractive having a photograph or video shot using a drone. It makes you see the beauty that cannot be shot using a regular camera from the ground. But of course you should consider the quality versus the price when getting one for your self.

Drones are great for capturing a wider range of scenarios or events, it gives you control on which view you want to capture. It is expensive, yes, and it also requires you a lot of practice to be able to perfectly capture a certain view. It is like your controlling a remote controlled helicopter that needs you to master the controls first because one mistake could make the drone fall and break. Especially drones are capable of flying onto the air, meters away from the ground. Although the risk is too dangerous, I can say that the image or video it provides is really, really great and it is all worth it.

The best thing when trying it is to check the reviews. You can check Youtube and reviews about drones and their photography. For me, it's really amazing since you can take a picture on any angle and above the ground for how many meters(depending on the specs). I would say that Drones with cameras are really amazing invention. It's just more expensive but it will be worth it to take pictures on important events and you can also make it as a business.

Aerial photography is more reliant on the quality of the hardware rather than the composition of the shot. As least compared to handheld photography. I've used cheap Chinese branded drones. They are so cheap I even though they were disposable. You really need at least an entry level drone from a respectable manufacturer to be able to do it decently. The stabilization is what really you are paying for.

I am not really into photography and I am not familiar with drone brands that I can suggest. But with the increase of drone users for photo and video, finding an affordable drone is easy. As a beginner, you might want to start with an affordable but reliable drone to familiarize yourself. Once you get the hang of it, you can now move to a more sophisticated drone. I'm sure you'll do your research prior to buying. You can find a lot of reviews on the web that can help you with your decision.

Drone photography is the use of drone technology to position the camera. It is very useful in taking scenery photos either with fish eye lens or other lenses. It provides a bird's eye view or elevated view from above an area. The main cost is the drone as one needs to purchase a high quality drone, which usually costs in the range of $500 - $1000. The photos or videos are sent directly to our smart phone if the camera attached to the drone is sync to our smart phone. One can also purchase drone parts, camera and remote control separately. The RC remote control comes with different number of channels. Buying parts separately is much cheaper but one needs to learn how to assemble although the learning curve is not steep.

I think the concept of drone photography is becoming very popular these days particularly in big social functions like engagements and marriages. Using drone technology can be very useful when the number of persons attending a function is very high. a drone can pick up almost all the important moments of any special occasion without any difficulty. I think the more the use of drone technology increases the more will it become affordable to the common public.
