Under Water Photography

I recently read an article about underwater photography and i was so amazed on the work they do just to have a great shot. In underwater photography its not all about taking pictures but also factors that involves equipment, diving skills, timing and lighting. Its really amazing how they catch the moment on its natural event.
I never tried this, because of lack of equipment and skills. But i am hoping one day that i could experience it. Anyone here already tried underwater photography? Kindly share your experience...

I bet it's really difficult to take wonderful photos underwater. But since we are in the digital world, we have several devices that can help us already. We just have to equipped ourselves with the proper skills in order for us to obtain great shots underwater.

Cheers to the photographers who take and share the beauty underwater. Not all individuals know how to swim and are capable of seeing the wonders of the water.

Exactly. It's definitely a challenge to take wonderful shots underwater. And yes, there are definitely people who are unfortunately unable to see the beauty underwater because they are afraid to swim. Fortunately we have photographers who are very generous to share their talents and also the inventors of underwater cameras. I am actually planning to purchase an underwater camera, maybe a GoPro or anything that is similar but is inexpensive because I really love to take photos of the underwater.

I agree with you. Finding a camera that will help you take photos underwater under your budget and with no worries of ruining it takes courage and money.

I'm not a photographer. But just like you I was very excited when I learned that this technique was being developed. I watched a documentary on television many years ago. The research was being done in Florida.

It must be really difficult to shoot movies that involve underwater scenes. They might have mastered several strategies in making the films the involve underwater scenes. Cheers to all the movie creators for sharing the beauty of underwater.

Yes! You are right. I agree with you. It must be really difficult to shoot movies with underwater scenes. It takes a lot of expertise. Its good that they have mastered their strategies before the actual shooting comes. Congratulations to all movie creators.

I believe also the have a great budget in filming this. Its because they need to have all the things needed before shooting the movie. This is done because of great minds behind them.

Definitely really hard to shoot underwater especially movie. But do you know that some ocean scenes are not really shoot in the ocean but in the swimming pool only? That is one thing that I never knew before but when I watched it in the Google it helps me to understand now.

Glad you shared this link. The pictures are really wonderful. I am amazed that these images were taken many years ago. It is good to know that people before were already interested in underwater photography. I don't think I can do this but I am sure that I will always enjoy seeing this kind of images.

Hahahaha never say never @superlicca. It is always surprising what life can present to us even at the time when we least expected. I know for certain that opportunities are limitless in this world and all it takes is a spirit of learning, enthusiasm and positivity.

Taking pictures underwater is not a joke. It requires training plus a good underwater camera to capture different species underwater. There are many beautiful creatures down there that we need to see by our naked eyes.

It really is a tedious work. How they do a quality image like that, with all the bubbles and currents and stuff is beyond me. I am not an experienced photographer myself. But I admire more those who take pictures of sharks and whales in their natural habitats, That sure takes courage.

You are right. I agree with you. Underwater photography is not that easy. I imagine what if the fishes that I want to capture in the camera are scared of me. How can I take pictures of them? I think timing is really needed that they will not swim away from you.

In our country there are a lot of places and tourist spot which are very nice for underwater photography. Also we have a nice climate and there are time when it is really good to have trip in the beach. I hope you can visit our country.

Same as my country. I live in a tropical country wherein many tourist spot to visit like beaches, falls and mountains. Many things you can do like scuba diving, mountain climbing and etc. You can take pictures the beautiful spot and post it in instagram.

I would have to agree with you. According to Department of Tourism, almost 8 million tourists visit our country because of too many tourist spots to checked on and are almost picture perfect. The beaches are the topmost pick of foreign tourists and also the never ending food and delicacies that they mostly enjoy. Even the local tourists, our very own, are maximizing the beauty of our land. Truly an amazing place to visit!

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

mark8625
Yes that is right. The numbers are increasing every year and it is a good indication that tourism is lively and kicking. Our country has been blessed by many natural resources compare to other nation and one thing that travellers like it too much is Philippines cheap things and English speaking country so very easy to communicate.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

NesMarcos
I could not disagree anymore. It is indeed the Philippines have a lot to share with the world. Our country has a lot of natural resources where we can benefit and enjoy. The way of living is not that high so many foreign travelers are enjoying it much because they can save a lot and lastly, Filipinos are conversant. Though we have too many dialects from region to region, still we can speak English well. We can easily communicate with foreigners and absolutely not too big language barriers included.

My apologies for the late response. I am now based in the Philippines. You will never ran out of nice beaches and tourist spots here in Philippines. If you would allow, I would like to give suggestion for some best dive sites in Philippines. For beginners, try Okikawa Maru Coron Palawan, Diver's Heaven Balicasag, Bohol, and Manit Muck, Alinao. But if you are in the advanced level in diving there are many superb diving sites in Philippines.
I can also recommend Palau and Bali Indonesia. They also have fantastic underwater reefs and beaches. I can assure that your photography skills will be put in to test at the same time you will enjoy it.

I've heard people say the Philippines is amazing for incredible beaches! Thank you so much for all the recommendations. You can visit Philippines anytime. You would enjoy a lot here. Travelling in the beaches like in Palawan is something that you will never regret. Indeed, you are right. But one must also consider the season before going in the Philippines. It will be suitable if they would visit Philippines during summer and December to February. The great barrier reef is one of the Marvel's of nature. It's the biggest and longest natural reefs in the world with a lot of fishes and other sea creatures living in it. I've seen it in documentaries and it's a very good place to film.

If you ever get the chance to go to the Great Barrier Reef I highly recommend it. It's one of my most-cherished travel experiences, getting to snorkel there. It would be even cooler to scuba but I don't have a scuba diving certification.

Yes, if you love nature it's an amazing spot, especially because the landscapes are so diverse. There's everything from the reefs to rainforests, to deserts! I would really like to go diving and take some photos someday.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

It’s definitely worth a visit, and very soon at that. The sad truth is that the Great Barrier Reef might not be around for very much longer. Due to climate change and acidification of our oceans, coral reefs around the globe are getting bleached and dying out, meaning these beautiful hubs of ocean life might not be around for very much longer. Thankfully there are people working on preserving these ecosystems, but it might already be much too late for many major reefs. It’s a shame what we’ve done to our oceans.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

amelia88
I've read a lot about that too and it's upsetting that because of humans, we're losing these treasures. I'm glad to have seen the reef for myself, but the tour guides with us told us that it was even more incredible years ago, when there was more reef and it wasn't subjected to reef bleaching. It's sad that lots of places worldwide are probably being destroyed because of us not looking after our environments better.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

DenisP
I’m hoping that we’re somehow going to be able to reverse the damage that we’ve caused, but it seems so unlikely. Perseveration efforts are being made across the globe, but the sad fact is that they’re just not being done at a fast-enough rate.

The coal and oil industry are doing everything they can to keep destroying the Earth, all as if their children and grandchildren aren’t going to be the one’s inheriting it. I don’t know what the logic is there, but it definitely does prove that greed and money are the root of all evil.

I have only seen this done very well in animal Discovery Channel and NatGeo Wild. I have seen so many sea animals that I never knew to be in existence till today. I have actually wondered how possible they have such a better camera coverage under water but I'm sure it's all as a result of how good the technology they use to capture such video and images.

Someone told me that iPhone can be used for under water photography. How true is that statement?

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Wow, I'm so impressed with getting to hear from you guys that being able to use iPhone under water for photography purposes wasn't just a rumor but a pure truth in itself. This feature gives iPhone a very far gap when it comes to comparing the product with Android devices. This is very impressive.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

esteban123
Well that is good to know since I am a fan of iPhone, I really don't know about that information that it is really true. Maybe that is why iPhone is very expensive compare to any other mobile phone because of having such characteristic which is to be waterproof. I think it would give more iPhone an edge over the others. The quality of it are simply amazing. I am not expecting that it can have more features other than being reliable and very convenient to have.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Yup, I think there are a few different brands that make iPhone accessories so you can use it underwater - one that I know of is Dog and Bone. I haven't tried their products myself but I think part of me would be nervous taking my phone underwater since I use it for so many things, not just taking pictures.

I never tried doing underwater photography but I think it is challenging and would be fun to do. I did a research about underwater photography and know some tips and things that need to be considered when doing the underwater photography. I found out that it's difficult, time-consuming, and expensive. Everything is different under the water. They say that lights need to be 6 times stronger than on land.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Chinet23
Now I get the difference between underwater photography, the real deal and those shots wherein they're just briefly submerged in the water. I see novice do it with just their smartphone with water resistant case. I think that works because they are just on the shallow part where more light can penetrate and they can pull it through. What you're talking about I guess is the deeper part of the water and would require more delicate equipment and professional skills.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

superlicca
You must be right. I think it is only a professional who can do the shoot on the deepest part of the water. It is more dangerous that is why you will need to be prepared for this by doing a research and using some useful equipment.

As Jacques Cousteau said, "the sea, once it exerts its spell, keeps you in its network of wonders forever." Perhaps we are so drawn to underwater photography because of its beauty, because of the oddities that they usually show or simply because we know that water covers almost 70% of the Earth. Whatever it is that makes them so special, underwater photos elevates a photography website to a whole new level.

Me too never had a chance yet to do photography underwater experience. But its my brother who really loves creatures under the sea. He even had these magazines and they were all good shots. The magazine can already convince me why not to try these kind of opportunity and see different creatures under the sun. So wonderful!

I think a huge part of underwater photography is having the right equipment - and I think for a lot of photography that can be the case. I've seen relative newbies come out with great underwater photography all because they had good equipment - but I guess you've got to have some idea about how to use it, too! Under Water Photography

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

mcnasci24
Capturing such stunning images comes at a price, mainly in terms of skills and, depending on your goals, can also be very costly for your wallet. Not only is it necessary to know how to dive/swim and master the techniques of underwater photography, but you must also have the ability to combine both skills at the same time. Little visibility, strong tides, waves... there are so many things that could go wrong when you photograph in the sea, that a good diving training is essential (even if you plan to shoot at a shallow depth) as it will teach you to face these situations and adapt to adverse conditions during the photo shoot.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

kammy143
It is really a necessity to use proper equipment when shooting underwater. I mean, the under water condition changes, lighting may differ, the pressure, the depth and a lot more must be taken in consideration. Having the knowledge on how to take photos like these, using the right equipment and physical skills in going under water is a must.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

amelia88
The pressure is one thing I would worry about! Especially if I was just using a smartphone, I don't know that I'd know how deep was safe for it not to damage the phone. I think it would be important to research those things before you potentially damage any items you have!

I love seeing sea animals, sea creatures, rock formations and beautiful things under water. I am very sure, it has a lot to offer. Can't share photos of that because that trip is only for the rich people. That was my only opinion because it really needs expensive tools to have a photo shoot like that. But still, they are great if I will have one.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Yeah, you are right. I read that the underwater camera is more expensive compared to the regular camera. And I think there is a special skill needed to perform the underwater photography.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

kammy143
That is so true. But, just like any other tasks, there are cheap alternatives that can be done in order to achieve such photographs. There are those little cellphone plastic baggies that can help in water proofing your phone. There are also those cheaper go pros in the market. So, I think it would be possible but only in a limited manner.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I would have to agree with you. Though underwater photography sounds expensive, there are other ways to make it possible if we are in a tight budget. I have seen a lot of mobile phones plastic baggies have been sold on online shops even in phone accessories shops. They are basically cheap and very useful.

It really takes great skills and the result is really amazing. Aside from the underwater creatures and sceneries, I also see models pose for underwater shots usually done in the pools. The underwater shots add to the dramatic effect. Underwater photos are quite enigmatic that's why I appreciate even those candid shots or taken by amateurs. What more those which are delicately and strategically done by the pros.

The first skill one needs to master before thinking of taking on underwater photography is knowing how to swim and hold a position under the water to take these pictures. Things like equipment, timing, camera operation skills, light, moment etc are required in all sorts of photography, whether you are doing areal photography, under water photography or landscape photography. For underwater photography, you need one more skill that is diving skills. You need to be a good diver to take good pictures in the depth of sea. This is not for everyone.

Underwater photography is the best for me because I really love to see how beautiful the beneath of the ocean surface, including the fishes, coral reefs, and all the creature that is living underwater. The only underwater photography I've done is using my water resistant phone. I've never gone deeper than 1 meter at most. I don't think smartphones are even allowed in seawater. Diving underwater needs special equipment. I guess pretty expensive stuff that the average joe can't afford. Shooting underwater attracts a niche crowd because of this.

There many other uses of underwater photography. Like in my job which involves underwater cunstruction. We use underwater photography to assess the amount of the integrity of water facilities/structures. Though underwater photography we could estimate the expenses that we have to make in order to repair damages of structure like piers and of dredging works.

That's true. I also like under water documentaries. At least the documentaries are the most decent ways to enjoy the beauty of the sea creatures and their habitat, though we are just watching them through recorded video. I wish they will do unusual documentaries as well, like sea monsters or they really exist and those creatures within the deepest spot of the ocean. But I'm not sure if the swimmers can survive that deep though.

I was able to have a conversation with a diver when I went on a swimming trip before. She told me that they underwater, visit and take photos of sunken ships. I was really impressed on how tough she is because I think, that was a scary scene to visit.

I would really like to try this kind photography. Haven't tried this before but I am sure that it'll be fun and full of adventure. It wasn't just about taking some photos but also the experience of diving and be underwater sums a lot more. Actually it is one my goals, since there are a lot of beautiful things underwater that not all people will be able to see the same thing you will see. Once I completed the gears that I needed for that photography, I'll share with you my experience.

I liked what you said about it not just being about the photography but about the experience of diving! I feel like being in the water is such a relaxing and tranquil experience, so it's great to do even if you're not bringing a camera along with you. However, I would say that bringing a camera helps preserve those amazing memories!

I always incorporate photography to my experiences so that whenever I get a chance to look at my photos again, I'll remember such wonderful experiences. I also believe that being underwater is like exploring a whole new world that you never seen before. If ever I will be given a chance to go on a dive and take some photos, I will really really grab it.

It really is like exploring a new world! Different views, different plants and corals, different animals - being able to do underwater photography is a special experience. I hope I have more opportunities to do it in the future, too!

In recent years, underwater photography in shallow seas (and sometimes pools) has become very popular, mainly due to the cost of submerging underwater photography equipment, which is crazy expensive. Wedding and maternity photo sessions are two of the most popular underwater photography genres, although "over-under" shots and action shots have really captivated the public. No matter what style of underwater photography you choose, you should remember that diving and swimming skills play an important role in this type of photography.

Let me tell you something, if there is anything exhausting is to try to take a picture underwater. My God, to get the perfect shot, you have to take like 100 terrible ones. I had a Kodak waterproof basic equipment, and whenever I went to the beach or the pool, I took my camera and started taking pics. Long story short, the battery died in just an hour, trying once and again to take an awesome pic, while all you can get is a lot of people drowning, water in your ears, red eyes, fake smiles, and lots of comedy style poses.

I really agree that in the Philippines, there are a lot of beautiful beaches that are really nice for under water photography. The country has been blessed with the different tourist attractions that is why I think people would be satisfied especially those who loves extreme under water activities. The climate is really perfect for diving activities which are one of the favorite hobbies of foreigners. It will really measure their under water photography skills and how good they are already.

I've never been to Philippines, but every person that I know, that have had the chance to experience it, say exactly the same. In fact, I met a couple that took diving lessons there, they showed me their pictures, and they look like National Geographic models hahaha. Honestly, I would really love to go there, because I really enjoy under water experiences.

I'm not a photographer but I really love seeing underwater photos. I have watched documentaries on TV amd Youtube about this and I find it really interesting and amazing. I bet that these professional photographers are enjoying because underwater photography is not easy. This can be adventurous specially for photographers who capture images for research purposes because they see the actual form of their subjects before other people can see it. And I also believe that underwater photography can measure and improve a photographer's ability and skills.

I only tried to take underwater photography when we had a team building and I take pictures with my friends and there are some fishes. That's all. But when I see any professional underwater photography, it's really interesting and I like viewing it. I recently check documentaries underwater like the Marian trench. For me, it's more cool especially if you have nice gadgets to take pictures underwater.

I will not be surprised if professional photographers will charge higher fees for underwater photography. I have not done it and I can only appreciate those lovely underwater shots. And definitely it will be even higher if they capture rare species underwater. I guess diving skills also will be necessary to take great shots.

I agree. It is just right that underwater photographers charge higher fees. Not just because of the great pictures that they are able to capture but also because what they are doing are in a way dangerous. Even those with proper training in diving encounters unexpected problems underwater.

I think that under water photography is a quiet challenging and interesting activity to make since not all people are blessed with the skills and expertise that it may require. It is relaxing and a very wonderful experience since it cannot be valued by money. Many people want to have such experience but only few people are lucky enough to have it in their entire life.

I live on an island and our water is so crystal clear and warm it is like swimming in a lukewarm bath. The fish in our lagoon is amazing and so is the coral and some of the other amazing underwater life we see here. I love taking pictures and one time I was given a very nice underwater camera. It isn't a professional camera by any means at all, but it is a nice camera and takes great underwater shots. I have been using this camera for years and have captured some great shots of the lemon sharks we have in our lagoon, the giant sea turtles, the rays, and tons of fish and even octopuses. If you are thinking of trying this I'd suggest starting off with a nice underwater camera that will run you around $300 to $400. This isn't the most expensive and it isn't professional by a long shot, but it is a good starter camera and they take fantastic photos in the water. One day I might upgrade to a professional camera, but for now, I'm happy with the one I have because it is compact and easy to take with you swimming.

I would like to recommend the Philippines if you would love to take underwater photography. We have 7,107 beautiful islands and islets here in our country. Some of the islands are considered as our tourist spots already such as Siargao, Palawan and Boracay. People are friendly over here and you'll surely capture wonderful underwater creatures.

It is quite hard because the current under water is unpredictable, so you really needs to get a right timing to take a picture under water.

I think so too. It's definitely on a category of its own. We're often used to hearing about the difficulties of taking pictures. Underwater Photography just makes you realize how much effort it truly takes to get a perfect shot.

I agree. It is really difficult for photographers to stay still and make sure that the camera will not shake while taking photos. The changing current could move them and can result to blurred photos. Apart from that, movements can scare away the subject.

I’m an average photographer and an awful swimmer, so the idea of taking pictures underwater seems kind of daunting to me, haha. I can swim okay above water but diving just isn’t for me.

None the less, I share the same admiration for underwater photographers as you do. The ocean is one of the most beautiful and intricate places on Earth, and I can’t help but be thankful to the photographers that manage to capture its beauty. Maybe after a couple dozen diving lessons I could get a chance at it myself.

I like looking at underwater photographs. It's so otherworldly looking, it looks like something from another planet. More so photos of exotic fishes and aquatic plants and other denizens of the deep with its vibrant colors, it always amazes me.

I'm also astonished by these photographs. They just show that there's so much more to discover. Like exotic species of plants and fish. I've also read that there are terrifying animals down there. They're very different since deep underwater creatures are able to withstand the high pressure down there.

I think if I only have a the equipment and the skills that I need to go under water photography then I would surely give it a try. I really love it very much because I love swimming, It is one of my favorite hobby before when I was still a kid and until now that I am already old I still do it for some time now. Under water photography is a dream come true for me since I have never been into this kind of activity that is why I am curious on how it feels and how it works. It must be exciting and interesting in my own opinion, I can't wait to have it in the near future.

They have tried under water photography where we see some great shots since I was in the location when those shooting takes place. It was really nice and interesting, it is one of the best photography that I had ever seen in my entire life. That was really pretty awesome, I wish I could see it again in the future.

Sunlight is essential for effective and stunning underwater photographs. I'm not sure about underwater videos though, for me they are both fantastic but videos tend to capture the essence more about the sea. I love seeing videos of underwater shipwrecks or marine life. It's fun to see clown fishes hiding and playing around corals. I love Nemo!!!

I have seen this photo many times on social media platforms (https://goo.gl/images/8AkQyv) and it's so amazing how photographers can be so creative at taking underwater photos. However, what makes me respect them more is how they manipulate the camera and make a scene look like it's real.

Whatever device you're using, wherever the stetting is, if you have the "eye" for capturing great scenes, then no one can stop you.

Underwater photography is a fascinating and very interesting form of photography. The world under the water is so unique and we still don't know much about the ecosystem which exists below the water. it looks so beautiful when we see these pictures, imagine what a fascinating experience it must be to the person who clicks these pictures under water. it is not easy however to take these pictures under water, it involves a lot of hard work and skill. I had tried to take some underwater pics while snorkelling in Thailand with my smartphone, but I was not able to take any good pic as it was my first time to do snorkelling in the sea. I hope I would be able to take some pictures next time.

I tried snorkeling before but I never tried taking pictures under the sea, because I don't have a waterproof camera. If given a chance to do that again i will bring waterproof camera to capture the magnificent beauty under the sea.

Underwater pictures has many uses, industrial, creative, and portraiture or fine art. and then there's simply undeniable fun. My underwater photography beginnings were inspecting underwater systems. developing picture primarily based records of surface discontinuities or material situations for future reference, or for restore planning purposes.

I am not lucky enough for not knowing how to swim. Under the sea photography requires swimming skill. I can only swim at very low water level. I should know first how to swim so that I can reach the bottom of the sea. The real beauty will be found at the bottom of the sea.

Underwater photography is so gorgeous. Plus, it takes a person with real talent, the right equipment and lots of experience. I deeply respect a perfectly crafted underwater photograph, as the amount of detail and time invested into this area of photography is huge. My favorites are photographies taken of divers in incredible locations, such as when a diver is captured in an almost other-worldly scene.

Its amazing that's a colorful world beyond the deep blue sea will welcome you if you dive in. Lately ive seen pictures of deep-sea creäture that you can't think exist but I think they are already preserved. I think it would be extremely.amazing to see them in real action.

Although under water photography is great and very trend I'm still worried about the effects of towards the animals. Don't they cause harm or danger for the species under water? I'm just concern because fish are sensitive especially to camera flash.
When we have gone through an ocean park they are very strict and told us not to take picures with flash.

Under Water Photography: I am also a fan of Under Water Photos it was so amazing thinking how they capture that certain creature doing its daily act naturally. It was really a great skill to have that kind of output. I also want t witness it in persob but I think it is impossible because i don't have enough courage to swim in deeper one.
