I personally don't have any t-shirt apparel or e-commerce shops where I would sell my own designs, however, I did become very interested in it when it started to gain so much popularity.

You are right. Making the t-shirts and simply selling them online is not that hard to set up now that you have various websites that do almost everything for you - they make the products, they ship them and so on. I don't know if you ever came across companies like Teespring? They're basically online company dealing with custom apparel - you can easily create your own t-shirt designs within a few clicks and start selling them on their website. You get a % of the sells. But they don't offer just t-shirts, you can design many things... such as mugs, hoodies, pillows, ...

Therefore, the market can be a bit saturated that is why the actual design of the apparel is EXTREMELY important. You want it to be as unique and eye catching as possible ;)

You're right. Nowadays when it's so easy for anyone to start making them and getting into the business, of course a lot of people are taking advantage. It really is important to set yourself apart from others if you plan on getting into such a saturated market. I think one of the best ways to utilize this business is to just use it to supplement a main source of income such as building a brand somewhere else and just having the shirts serve as merchandise for that brand.

I was involved in T-shirt printing in the past and from my experience there are 2 major factors that affect tshirt printing companies here in my country first is Copyright - the saleable shirts are always those that have graphic Movie, TV, Cartoon, Comic Characters printed on it. How can you compete with that? You can compete by doing non traditional prints like Tie-Dyed and Airbrushed. But there's also a lot of competitors. If you try doing originals, the good brands will just eat your market up. Second Factor is Imports - okay earlier I said copyright remember? The market is always flooded with knockoff copyrighted shirts and famous brands that costs as low as our manufacturing cost. All these shirts are coming from China. So it's almost an impossibllity to succeed in T-shirt printing in my country.

I think T-shirt designs are one thing on how you can tell what is the personality of the person. It is sometimes true for some people but not all. Some people just wear T-shirts without no purpose. Some wear shirts because they feel to wear them.

When I come to think of it, a lot of branded t-shirts does not really have much design on them. Usually it is just the logo and that's it. I don't know if it is just a minimalist approach or it is just because of thee brand hype. But the craziest thing is they sell. And they sell well.

I have not come across the company known as Teespring, but it seems that my uncle might be needing their services as he is a great designer of t-shirt which is even quite popular here in the country. When I get to know more about this company through my research, I will communicate the details to me on how to go about making his products (t-shirts) on the internet.

I do agree that designs are extremely important because it's tied in to the cost and production as well as saleability and profit. A good or bad design can make or break a T-shirt Productions Company. So it's important to always have good and correctly designed shirts.

For a few years now, a lot of business have been popping up online that allow you to create your own shirts and designs. They became especially popular after many content creators on YouTube began looking for ways to easily create and sell merchandise like shirts and hats for their fanbase. As someone with a background in graphic design, I looked into potentially working as a freelancer t-shirt designer. Safe to say, you're not always going to get the type of work you want. While I would rather create intricate designs with colorful art, a lot of companies these days just want simple things like funny quotes. The industry is really just oversaturated.

You've got me thinking about creating a lot of ideas and then trying to sell them to online t-shirt companies, but I am not sure how lucrative that would be. It is cool to be able to make and print and order your own shirts online. This is fun, and it makes for great novelty items and gifts. Like all things online, and all things freelance and we-related, the industry is definitely over-saturated, but I still think there is still room for innovation and personal success. Call me a dreamer...

I think if you are making a shirt design the fabric should be the priority, and as for the design, it should just be unique and well made. If I were the one giving advice on how the design should look, I would say to keep it simple, since nowadays I rarely see people wearing shirts with elaborate designs anymore. From time to time a complex novelty design may entice some people, but if you are trying to reach more then it should be simpler so it can appeal to more people.

Baburra,
I agree with you here that "less is more" when it comes to a tee shirt. I think that a lot of people gravitate towards tees that express something about their personalities, and so I think a direct and simple message, whether humorous or a logo, or a phrase, is a lot more effective than some busy, chaotic, overdone design. Novelty is one thing, but making a statement with your minimalist design is much more effective, at least to my eye.

As a customer, I'm always looking for a good quality/price value, so obviously if I want to invest in a t-shirt company, that should be a priority. Designing is a very tricky part, because that depends on customer preference, so you could have 2 options, one is to offer a personal printing, which is when clients send you their preferred design, and you just have to put fabric and printing. The other option, is to offer general designs that can be liked for mostly of the clients. That's when you have to search for clever, funny, cute ideas that can be desirable for your customers, and make them want to get them.

I agree, I'm very particular about the fabric of my clothes and it takes priority over the design when I look for clothes to buy. Simple designs are better, and even plain clothes look nice nowadays.

I think that simple T-shirts designs are cool. Lots of people are actually after simple and sweet designs unlike the intimidating designs other wear. Simple designs are more of classic style and it attracts unique people to purchase such T-shirts.

It's an extremely competitive market now and I would say to be very careful before entering this market. You should think carefully and make sure that you have a good business plan. The actual designs of the t-shirts will have to be good if you enter this market as that is what will make you unique and differentiate your company from competitors. If you are able to come up with unique and funny designs for your t-shirts then you will do extremely well.

The one thing to remember about t-shirt designs if you're not using your own official business brand or logo - is that you must go over your design with a fine toothed comb. Make sure it doesn't resemble anyone else's emblems. Otherwise you'd get a cease and desist letter immediately. Also be certain that your design is heavily test marketed first. Find people within your target audience and see how receptive they are to the shirts. Before moving into heavy production with them.

What @Judas2018 said is true. It is really important to find a target audience for your product and make sure that your product is with good quality. I also think that it's easier for one to promote a certain product specially online if there is a common niche attached into it. It will give way for you to easily promote and eventually be searched for in the future.

Yeah, people are more vigilant about plagiarism and they can easily call you out online which could ruin your business for good. Certain Tshirt makers require a certain quota first of confirmed orders before they even begin production.

From my observations lately, it seems that cartoon designs are more selling now on T - shirts than any other kind of design, and most companies are now following the trend to produce lots of T-shirts with cartooned character designs. Girls love it more than anything else when it comes to their shirts.

Superhero designs are also a big hit, especially with the abundance of Marvel and DC movies right now.

You are very much correct about that, take for instance how much the T-shirts designs of Black Panther is selling recently, it's numbers are way above charts. I actually have one for myself #Wakanda.

True, Marvel is generally outperforming DC nowadays due to their films even if Superman and Batman used to be the more popular superheroes. Avengers: Infinity War is coming up and the demand for such T-shirts will further increase.

Superhero t-shirts are extremely popular especially with kids because of the latest superhero films. The only problem is copyright and trademarks. Like I said above, in another comment, you need to be careful because you could end up getting sued or getting a cease & desist order.

Copyright is an issue, although if you work locally in developing countries, bigger companies usually don't waste time trying to go after individual business owners.

They are definitely quite a bit hit nowadays but you need to remember to be careful about the designs that you put on your t-shirts. There are so many designs out there that you need to be careful about things like copyright and even trademarks. As long as they have been custom drawn by you and do not resemble anything popular, you should be fine.

It's all about what's hot, what's popular, what's the in fashion. This kind of designs are fast selling but such designs are also short lived. Unlike Classic Designs which can be worn and use for decades without having a negative effect.
