Pixel Art, a cute way to design personalized products

My friend asked me a month ago to design her personalized mugs with pixel chibi drawings. When I finished my designs, I immediately presented it to her and she really liked it. We printed three of the designs on to 50 mugs and a lot of people seem to like it very much.  Pixel art has been available for a long time now and because of my friend's suggestion I got a chance to explore a bit about it. What is your point of view about pixel art?

I think it's just like any style of art wherein you probably have a lot of people doing it already but it takes someone who has the eye for it and the dedication to follow through and keep at it to be successful in it. I myself would not consider it one of my favorite styles and while it looks easy since it is simple I'm sure it still has some complexity to it that only those with a unique vision can add to make it truly personalized and stand out from the rest.

It definitely does take a certain level of dedication. Also, the "normal" pixel art might be considered as easy but you can go down the road of 3D pixel art as well which makes it ten times harder. The 3D takes a lot of effort and patience because you often have to draw pixel by pixel and correct the smallest details.

I know. 3D takes up a lot of time to accomplish and could really take up much of your budget. This type of art to be placed in merchandise is quite simple but if done in a tasteful manner, it could have a chance to sell in the market.

Very true, I did not even think of that or consider it. I don't think I have seen many art like this though so maybe that's why. I've seen a lot more of this type of art is in Lego constructions, I suppose. Either way, if you are building pixel art from software, then I do agree it really does feel like it would be very complex.

" …I'm sure it still has some complexity to it that only those with a unique vision can add to make it truly personalized and stand out from the rest."

The thing about pixel art is that it is absolutely, completely, 100% entirely intentional. When it comes to traditional painting and illustration you have to have a vision or an idea in your head, and you have to have an established technique for bringing it to life. However, not every single stroke of your brush has to be meticulous and deliberate. Beautiful things can be created just by chance or accident. On the other hand, with pixel art, every single pixel you place has to be absolutely intentional. Everything is very controlled and deliberate compared to traditional art.

I agree with you, artist have different style and way of art. If you are into that then do it, but not every artist can do what. others do.

Ah, you brought me back some memories. When I was around 14 years old and was just getting to know the internet I came across the pixel art. It was extremely popular back then... there were many forums that revolved around it and you'd post your creations, people would rate them, etc.

I made so much pixel art then. Probably 5+ per week, haha. But that's been years ago and I haven't made any in forever. Now you made me want to create something new. Pixel art is really nice!

That is the same way I felt when my friend suggested it to me. I admit that I am a big fan of video games to which I relate the designs I made. Simple figures such as Pacman, Super Mario and other characters from games played a big deal in my designs. I also make pixel drawings when I was in secondary school. I have graphing papers which allowed me to create.

Yeah, pixel art reminds me of the old Windows XP days. When Windows XP was first a thing, following up Windows 2000. Seems like just yesterday but, it was actually years ago.

For me, it reminds me of old arcade games where in almost everything in it is formed through pixels. I like the simplicity of it.

Pixel art is growing in usage and appreciation. I can see samples in malls and even online stores. It's a fad which I myself love. I have products with pixel art on them.

It's a good thing to mix it with your usual products to sell if you are into business. It's a nice marketing strategy for a change.

True. I do believe that there are people who really appreciate this kind of artistry and like you. I also think that this can be a good way to catch the attention of consumers which helps in attracting consumers .

It's made a comeback with the younger millennials and creative types. Which I see no problem with. The question is though, when they get older will they too abandon it by the wayside for something more 'adult?'

As I see it, there is a big possibility. But, just like fashion, some of the other stuff crawl its' way back to the trend. It may not stay as long but still may be able to be back once in a while.

I have never tried my hands on pixle art, however, I think it is a good way to have designs on various items like mugs, plates, t-shirts etc. So far, my designing skills are limited to photo editing on photoshp. I manipulate photos heavily (creating a composite image, do airbrushing or color and light correction). I have never designed T shirt or mug but I am interested in trying.

I love Pixel Art. But I have never really bothered to go into it because of difficult it is. When you look at various different pieces of pixel Art, you immeditely think that it looks quite easy to make but when you actually try, it's a totally different story. I tried and I just gave up after a while because it is not easy.

Well come to think of it, if the design is simple, it really isn't that difficult to do. I'ts like a virtual lego, the more you stack, the more elaborate the design is.

There is nothing that beats arts designs in any form, be it creative arts, or sculpture arts, they have a way of capturing people's interests and appeals. I have a good taste for all sorts of arts especially drawings, they speak so much more than words.

True. I also believe that each design has their own likability. pixelated arts is one of them. I love the simplicity of it without going overboard with the details. I saw a pixelated design once where the heart on the mug changes in color from black to red. This proves that no matter what , there is a big impact on how design affects the sellability of a product.

I actually really love pixel art! I've been playing video games since the early 90's and the Super Nintendo is my favorite video game console of all the time. Because of this I actually have a passion for 16-bit sprite and pixel art. I'm looking to start a Let's Play channel on YouTube just as a hobby, and I'm currently working on a pixel art animation for the introduction which involves a medley of different 16-bit pixel art styles from the SNES era!

Customised wares are available for purchase online. We just need to upload the images of what we want to be printed but how do you get those prints on items such as mugs and singlets yourself? Is it expensive to do that. I would love to own such a gadget. .

I like pixel art, it has a nostalgic feel to it. It reminds me of cross stitch art which became popular in the 90's.

Whenever I see pixel art, I remember the good old days, when I'm using a personal computer which have low built-in video card memory, you get to see images and pictures in pixelated form.

It's funny that you should mention it reminds you of cross stitch art, since I never really thought about it that way. I know what cross stitch art is, but I've never actually seen a work of cross stitch art in person. I suppose it might have something to do with cross stitch art declining in popularity before my time. But now that I think about it, cross stitching really is like pixel art on fabric.

What I wanted to say is it's interesting how two people can share different perspectives on the same art form. I personally grew up with retro video games, so when I think pixel art that's what my mind defaults to. Of course that's a common thought though, given that video games are where pixel art got its start.

Yes it is. I am fascinated by how it is made. Those different colors with different content forming one great masterpiece is an art that no one can resist. Like any other forms of art it is the description of how an artist portrays his reality.

I love pixel art mainly because how its art style reminds me of my childhood when I would play all these games with those types of drawings. It also gives a nice feel to personalized products especially if you're from the years when this was the popular art design of choice. It's nice to see its resurgence.

I know, right? Super Mario, Galaga and other games are simple but made a mark in history. Just like you, it also brings back some good childhood memories.

I was at the mall yesterday and I saw a shirt that from a far looks like a tie dyed shirt, but upon closer inspection I realized that it has a pixelated design. It's unique look and design is best for summer.

Wow. That's nice! There are a lot of designs out there that are simple, but really is appealing to the public. Graphic and statement shirts is really a staple in the market.

I agree although the art may look quite simple, what matters more is the meaning behind the art. Using chibis can also let the customer have an input on the style regardless of whether they know how to draw or not. Using of chibis can also make the art represent the person more in the cute and simple way that they are drawn so even at first glance, other people will be able to distinguish what is special about the design and the person.

Recently I went to an art bazaar and I saw someone selling pixelated art works of Disney animated characters using colored glass globules, its the first time I saw such it was stunning. Pixelated Art can be done using different kinds of materials and it is continuously gaining popularity.

Well you just have to continue what you're doing as long as you are happy. If you decide to continue pixelated art, you should explore more on how will you improve that art style where in people find it more enticing and unique from other artist's style. Create you own improvise pixelated kind of stuff that might also useful to you and to everyone. If anyone noticed your art style or let say an installation (example), you can market your art and who knows if that would be a big hit for you.

Thank you for the great advice. I really think that originality in ones work or product is important and also saves a lot of trouble from copyright claims. So original designs is one of the best things to consider in making products. I hope to learn more about this craft and who knows, maybe one day I would be able to turn my hobby into a business.
