Do you think banner ads are still relevant in this day and age?

These days with so many people using adblock most banner ads are considered spam and most people don't even pay attention to them. I know when I see a banner ad I can't tell you 99.99% of the time what the banner ad said because I am so use to seeing them as spam. So my question to you is do you think banner ads are still relevant in this day and age?

I am like you in that i tend to gloss over them. I guess that I have gotten accustomed to this over the years--if they are done really well though, to the point where they strike my fancy, I do tend to pay attention to them, especially if they tend to speak to or coincide with the content of the website upon which they appear. I am sure they are not all spam, but the incessant spammers have conditioned me to be wary of banner ads, unfortunately, so I tend to just scan over them and move on, whether they deserve that knee-jerk reaction or not.

Not all banners are spam, as you rightly pointed out, but the issue arises when some of them are placed on sites we can say that they do not conform with the message being passed.

Yeah, some sites are overloaded with banner ads even when smaller ads are enough, and there are some inappropriate banner ads that aren't filtered by the site, and affects the overall design and appearance of the website.

As to the question, I don't think banner ads are still relevant today. I, personally don't pay attention to these and would rather have them blocked by my browser as for the reason that, some of it contains disturbing and inappropriate graphics. Based on my observation, the best way to publicize your products and services is to get engaged with popular social networking sites such as the Facebook and Instagram. I consider these two to be effective advertising platforms because it is used by people worldwide. Having attractive and well-designed graphic promotions are all that you need, although some also provides short advertisement videos that captures people's interest.

Banner ads are definitely still relevant. Advertisers will still pay a hefty sum to get their banner or advertisements cued up on a high traffic website. I think if anything has changed - it's where banners are placed and how high quality they are. You can't just get clicks and visits with "average" banner work anymore. Your banner must be of the highest visual quality and caliber - And should also be animated in some way.

I have to agree with you on sticking with banner ads not being spam. Although it's almost as if people are looking past banner ads for other forms of ads that exist today, it still didn't rule out that banner ads were once on top the perch back in days. Also I believe people who knows how to make use of it well still use it effectively.

In my experience, in text ads get more engagements than banner ads. However, having one or two banner ads that blend well with your content also make your website visually appealing. There is a drawback of having too many banners ads because it will make the website cluttered. I use Adsense ads as banner ad as well as in-text ads. Both have a good conversion rate.

Having a minimum of two banner head can go a long way in making the site look cool and, like you noted too, once the intext ads are there, it becomes a complement of each other.

Text ads do still get engagement but banner ads look better on websites. Most sites within my niche are all using or employing banner ads. Text ads aren't even in the conversation. I think that's because social media is being used so much these days, it's taking the place of text advertising where websites or online spaces used to hold that territory.

banner ads make your website visually appealing. However, having too many banner ads will make your website look dirty. I always have a banner ad in the header and footer. I always try to avoid banner ads on the side bars, however, sometimes I have to use side bars as well.
If you are using affiliate products, banner ads have a good conversion rate.

I agree. Banner ads on our official site normally occupy the top of the page, the sidebar, and the foot of the page. Very neat yet effective. Overdoing it makes things look really messy - as do poorly designed banner ads.

On my websites, I use adsense and amazon ads and other affiliate ads. Normally, I reserve banner ads for affiliate products and Adsense for in text ads. I want contextual ads inside my ads and related products on header, footer and side bars. Usually, I use 5 ad units on my page. Some say, having 5 ad units is too much, but I am doing this as long as I get good conversion.

I used to do Amazon ads but not anymore. I mostly stick to adsense, affiliates and paid ads. In which people buy space from me for a certain amount of time.

I have not sold my ad space yet. I am aware of the marketplace where we can sell our ad space, however, I have not joined these marketplaces because my websites do not draw high volume traffic. Amazon has not been very good to me but I continue to use amazon because it is the most trusted affiliate network.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Judas2018
It certainly is trusted - you just make more money from delivering Amazon affiliate links through social media channels than their site-based banner ads.

I am not using Amazon banners. I use products instead. When I am publishing an article on my blog, I will find related products on Amazon and include inside my article. having related products in my content will drive sales. For instance, I recently published a review of five movies based on world war. For every movie review, I published one amazon and (the movie DVD). The person who takes interest in my movie review will definitely want to watch the movies.

Ah, I see. I remember the old days of Amazon advertising when they gave publishers the option to use inline ads. That would underline certain words within a sentence or article and when you hover over them - an advertisement pops up.

I became Amazon affiliate when I joined Hubpages in 2010. Hubpages allowed the users to find related Amazon products. There was a widget for this purpose. The earning were directly received through Hubpages. I don't know about inline ads. Were these ads similar to the current infolink ad? How effective was this advertising method?

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Judas2018
Yeah they were similar to infolink, clicksor, etc. They were effective for me but Amazon shut them down for some reason. They also ended the Astore widget recently as well.

As an Amazon affiliate marketer, I have also noticed that Amazon ended Astore. I had Astore on my two blogs. This was a great feature. You could build Amazon shopping page on any website o blog. However, we have to choose products, copy HTLM code and place on website manually. There is a lot of work on this.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Judas2018
Yeah. Amazon's reasoning for this was they had reports and data which said the Astore was not one of their best performing affiliate tools. I am not sure if that's accurate but either way, it's gone for good now as a useful tool for affiliates.

I am more comfortable in having related products on my blogs rather than A store. I did once used A store feature on one of my blogs, however, there was no sales.
Currently Amazon has introduced strip ads and I am going to use these ads on my blogs. Strip ads blend well with contents.

With my current site, I have it in a few places such as in between content or on the sidebar. One location is between the blog posts section because it doesn't affect the user's experience of the site too much but it's still visible for users to see. I have never bothered with the footer because of the fact that users will very rarely look there.

I definitely agree that text ads get way more engagements and that's why certain ad networks have begun offering them for us, the website owners. I have tried putting some into my articles and it works really, really well. You just have to be careful not to put too many or it comes off as very forced and overly pushy.

Personally, I think that graphical advertisements are much more effective because they are much more eye-catching and because of that users are much more likely to see it and view it for a few seconds. Most of the sites I actually visit don't even have that many text advertisements anymore to be fair.

Given the fact that people are still making money from AdSense revenue on their sites, I would definitely say that banner ads are still relevant. The fact is that a large chunk of people aren't even aware of the existence of AdBlock. The older generations in particular have no clue about it, as out of all the people age 40 and up that I know, maybe two of them use AdBlock.

Heck there are people my age (25) who don't really know about AdBlock, and have just accepted ads as a regular part of the internet browsing experience.

I personally keep AdBlock on for the most part, until I feel a website or YouTube channel has earned the right for me to turn it off. I kind of believe in karma and I wouldn't want someone to keep their blocker on if they like my content either.

This is a really good point here, DenisP, and it is one which I definitely overlooked in my thinking of this subject. i am one of those above 40 years of age folks you are referring to, and I was not aware of AdBlock until your post here, so thanks for that, lol. I like your last paragraph here especially--we should treat others how we want to be treated ourselves, in all things in life.

AdBlock can be an ultra useful extension while browsing the internet. I don't mind regular 'ol advertisements on websites, but some sites might use some fishy strategies with their advertising and pop-ups, and you may run the risk of catching some nasty malware.

I once got a malware alert from a website about male hairstyles. HAIRSTYLES. These things pop up where you least expect them.

A lot of sites are catching on to AdBlock though, and won't even let you browse until you turn it off. I'm sure a new extension will eventually circumvent that, though, if one doesn't exist already.

Barida
In our technological world, banner ads can still he useful as long as the marketers using them to sell adjust to include some word ads on it. Ad blockers are just there for restricting the incessant appearing of these banners while we surf the internet and not a means to limit their relevance.

When banner ads are used effectively, I don't see anything wrong with it or it being a spam. But when it's usage is abused by the person involved with how it's posted on several sites, then that is a serious problem in my opinion.

I also use adblock when visiting some sites. I think banner ads are really still relevant if used well. Some are too many and even repetitive and that is why viewers don't pay attention to them anymore. I also consider them as spam but I think they are still relevant.

For me, whenever I travel, I do manage to notice those banner ads that are huge and visible on the road that we're taking and I'm not annoyed about it. In fact, I do want to look at their advertisement and that way, I do appreciate what they're trying to advertise. I hate seeing those ads online since not only it annoys me but also I find it not relevant to the sites that I've been browsing. I also hate those ads whenever I watch youtube videos and then suddenly, it will pause your videos and shows their ads and you can't do anything to make it go away. You have to wait for at least 5 seconds or worse, you have to finish it completely. I also hate those ads where it says "Enhancement for something" on the side which is not a kid friendly for me. It's so annoying.

That's a really good question. I honestly think that regardless of various ad blocking plugins and software that we have, ad banners are still very much relevant. They are definitely less relevant than some years ago when you were sort of forced to just view the ads whether you wanted to or not but I think that not that many people use ad block. The younger generation maybe but I know that the older not so much.

Also, if you have noticed, you can see some big sites already detecting whether you have AdBlock enabled and they prompt you to disable it if you want to read a particular article or browser their website.

Yes it is. I think banner ads are relevant. These ads are more visual compared to text ads which attracts more engagements. As I see it, many of you are concerned about multiple ads shown in websites. The thing is, if banner ads are used strategically, the right amount and combination of these ads may help the site greatly.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

JoeMilford
I think that you hit it on the head when you said these things need be used "strategically"--I think that is good for ALL advertising which we do online or on our sites. People at their sites tend to go overboard and sometimes bombard the audience with way too many ads and pop-ups, and this can really turn off potential readers and customers for your content. I know that this kind of thing definitely turns me off.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Martinsx1
I completely agree with your suggestion on how to use banner ads to maximize its relevance and effectiveness. I love how you put it in saying if it's STRATEGICALLY used, it's definitely bound to be more effective than just words placed ads.

Yes, I do think they still are important as I have few banners on ads and get some traffic from them. Not as much as I use to but I am still getting conversions through a few of them. It also depends on the banner as some do look spammy, but if it is an interesting banner with related to the niche you are on then it does carry some weight.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

DarthHazard
It depends I guess. Personally, I don't use an advertisement blocker and if the banner advertisement is eye catching then I will look at it quickly. And because of the fact that ads are now targetted, chances are that I actually find the advertisement quite useful and end up having a look at it for a few seconds. I still have banners ads on my site and there are quite a lot of views for them so I don't think that they are NOT relevant anymore.

I believe banner ads are still relevant despite the fact that they are annoying sometimes. These banner ads show the things that a person usually searches online for example online shopping sites or social media sites. These banner ads are helpful for websites to promote their product and they serve as a reminder or like saying "Hey, i believe you were looking for affordable shoes, check this out they're on sale".

Banners are still effective tools to catch ones' eye of attention. It's just a matter of how effective the banner is, how it was made to lure effective attention, to really be successful in disseminating information to the viewer. It pays to study Advertising so your banners will not be a waste.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I think that it also depends upon the type of page as well. For example, at my writing blog, I do plaster that site with tons of ads or any banner ads; however, I have another blog in a different niche where banner ads make more sense and tend to get a little bit of attention. I think the content and niche should always dictate the appearance of the page you are presenting to your audience(s).

Well there are ad companies that lock onto peoples browsing habits. So even if someones website has nothing to do with cars for example. If a site visitor was searching or browsing for cars or automobile related topics before arriving to your site. Some ad servers will begin displaying auto ads for that particular visitor. Adsense is notorious for this.

I think ads banner is still relevant today. It is still helpful somehow specially on new products and services. And, it will be more effective if those are shown on some well-visited online social media sites like Facebook and Youtube. Even though it is annoying sometimes, to business, it is a good engine to promote and advertise their products and services. It is also beneficial to consumers because they will be notified easily what is in and what is new and to avail current promotions on a certain products or services especially on Holidays. Do you think banner ads are still relevant in this day and age?

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Not very relevant to me honestly, they seem very annoying and I always consider those as spam. However, that doesn't mean the same for everybody, so, if there's someone making money from them, of course you can consider banner ads relevant. They've been taking spaces in our screen, until they got usual, and of course they have some influence in our brain somehow. Not very important to me though, but useful and lucrative for others.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Pop up or pop under ads can be considered as spam. Since they just appear separately from the site you're visiting. But banner ads are an integral part of almost any website you visit. These days - they're just as important as the site content itself.
