That's a tough call, I can't really decide between the two. I appreciate both a well written and illustrated manga as well as a well-produced anime. I really enjoy what anime I have seen, but I don't watch very much in general. I don't have a whole of time to watch TV shows, so when I do I dedicate my time to catching up on other things like House of Cards, The Walking Dead (which is actually a comic book adaptation!) and the likes.

Most recently, however, I've really loved reading One Punch Man. I think it gives an interesting perspective on the roles of a comic book hero, and it's interesting to see the main character's attitude toward hero work when he's so powerful he can literally beat anyone in a single punch. I started watching the anime a while back, and it seemed pretty true to form in regards to the manga.

I'm also in the process of slowly working my way through Sword Art Online, which is a phenomenal anime in my opinion.

What manga lines or anime series do you recommend?

It's really hard to choose because both are really awesome in their own ways. You gotta learn how to appreciate each of them before choosing one which makes it even hard because you would always appreciate them both specially if they are your favorite animes!

One Punch Man is a really fun anime. Have they released the season 2 already? It's one of the animes that I don't want to read the manga version for some reason.

Hmm. The last manga that I read and this was before, was probably HunterXHunter. I read it from start to finish because I really missed the show and the nostalgia was killing me. Lol I can't recommend you anything since I don't know what your favorite anime genres are. :/

As far as I can tell, season 2 has not been released yet. I love the manga though, and it's one of the few things I've read recently that has actually made me laugh out loud at times.

I've heard of HunterXHunter but I haven't gotten around to reading it yet.

I'm not too terribly picky when it comes to anime or manga I don't think. I've watched the "required" anime shows like Full Metal Alchemist, Attack on Titan, Dragonball and such, but what I really like are ridiculous, over the top stories. This is why I like One Punch Man so much. One of my favorite anime shows was Kill La Kill. If you've seen it, you know what I mean by "over the top" storylines.

I'm a fan of horror-themed manga, too. I like Junji Ito's work like Uzumaki and Gyo, as well as Gantz, which was ridiculously violent at times.

So do I! It's hilarious and awesome at the same time. Finally, an anime that has sense and humor. About HunterXHunter, it's a good anime but I am not sure if you will dig it. I suggest you go and try out Death Note if you haven't seen it. You won't regret. ;)

One Punch Man which run for only a season is one of my favorite titles. Recently there's need that it's second season would be released early next year. There's also one title which is similar to it, it's called MOB PSYCHO 100, which is like One Punch Man in the spiritual world.

Hey dear,
I love your honesty by the way, but I feel the version of an anime is much better, I love manga version too but not as much as the anime version. I am a freak for anime, I love all their emotions and the whole storylines and all, I could lock myself in a room for a week just to finish a whole entire seasons of any animes.

In another way I use to love manta reading a lot than the main anime version but I had to stop the whole obsessions, because I discovered that manga reading was a waste of internet resources compared to watching anime versions. Anime version don't take up much space on your device compared to manga versions, I noticed also that manga's always put your device at a high risk of crashing and shutting down entirely, due to the virus that come from this websites and the downloads. You will discover that your system is having full capacity but not reflecting that it has such issues, from there it goes to your device/ system always going off itself, these are the things that goes wrong when you have manga version but not anime version. In essence Anime rules and win.

I like that Manga books are advanced when it comes to stories. Most anime adaptations take a long time. Like months or years before they release a new season. And so catching up will take a very long time.

I understand what you're saying because I too have that predicament with my favorite anime title which is Baki the Grappler. The anime version are like a year behind the Manga version.

I like anime version, but you are right it takes too much space in my phone so I rarely read manga now also, I hate how slow the updates in some manga.

Manga Books are the basis of Anime. And are more detailed when it comes to storytelling and character buildup. Sometimes I do read the books first but most of the time I prefer watching the series because graphically it's more exciting.

hm.. some animes i watch before i read the manga and sometimes its the other way.The only reason it is that way is cause when i find a manga i like i read
it when i see o there is an anime for the manga i watch the anime after
reading the manga.
But i am more of a manga reader, so probably Manga first? xD

I'm the opposite, and I'm more inclined to watch anime than to read manga. Even if I love the anime, I would wait until the next season gets released before I even consider browsing the manga. I only read the manga when the anime has taken more than a year to release a new episode and isn't sure if production is going to continue

I could go either way on this. As a guy who grew up reading, collecting, and loving comic books and graphic novels, I am partial to reading them first. I also used to draw comics and do story boards and things of that nature, so I really enjoy seeing how the artists design and execute their layouts on their pages. I like to study their art and try to imitate it to a degree in my own drawings, which is fun. If only I were a better artist! It is also interesting to know the print version first and then compare how it translates into the film version. When the animators transform the print version into an entirely different medium, this creates a lot of exciting possibilities. However, the stoty has to be solid in the print version in the first place for it to be any good.

Agree, I'm an avid reader, and also have a wide taste about it. So, to put it in a nutshell, I can read anything, doesn't matter the topic, author, or tendency. Comics have been part of my life since I was able to read, so for sure any manga/anime version will for sure have my attention. If I have to compare printed version with the animated one, then I have no problem with it too, in fact, that would give an extra touch of imagination to the characters I already know in the comic version.

I prefer to watch anime first and then delve into the manga if I liked it. I have a hard time conjuring faces and voices in my mind so to have those pre-supplied by a video makes it a lot more fun for me to read the comic after. Plus, manga has a tendency to carry the narrative past what the animated series did. If you liked a particular set of characters, there's nothing better than getting a little more of them.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

galegatling
Yeah! That works too! It's like after you watch the video, you already know how they really look like and how they sound so in your head, when you read the manga version, they are already moving and fighting and all the colours etc. And it's amazing I think. Although nothing beats the animation. Reading the manga version of an anime

Some anime also deviate from the source material so you might get confused with the plot and it kind of takes the fun of getting key plot points revealed through a manga than watching the animation. I only read manga when an anime takes too long (> 1 year) to release a new episode.

So Manga is like a comic book or graphic novel version of an anime television show? I don't really watch anime so I wasn't aware of this so thanks for clearing it up a bit with the first sentence Reading the manga version of an anime. I have never really watched anime and I was thinking of starting to watch it so I guess this is a good thread to post m questions in. What should I do to start watching anime? Is there a specific show that would be good?

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I believe it tends to be the other way around. Most of the anime we see in the west tend to be sourced from a publication called Shonen Jump. They have different artists tell story lines over time and, if they were popular, animation studios may license them for production. Not all anime is produced this way, but it probably is responsible for the bulk of what the industry produces. There's a certain Darwinism to how the Japanese vet their pop-cultural materials that makes this an especially lively medium if you are the type of person who enjoys it.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Oh okay. Thank you for pointing that out. I did a quick google search to see what Shonen Jump was and it seems to be some sort of a magazine. So does this magazine have like comics and stories that feature Anime characters? And then animations and videos are produced that recreate these comics and stories?

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Depends on what genre or category of anime do you want to watch. It's pretty straightforward in my opinion. Much like that of a movie; you choose a genre that you like and watch it. Animes also have a wide selection and choices when it comes to genres.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

treecko142
Yeah, animes usually come from their source material which is the manga. There are a lot of good shows in anime in various genre, depending on what your preference is. However, if you're used to the Western cartoons or other series, there are some differences in the overall tone (some may transition very quickly from being serious to being childish), the humor is also different, and you might need to get used to the art style in anime.

When I was still a teenager, I was very good with reading Manga because they are fun as well. Should I say that I don't really care about having to wait for the full animation to be released and just read any comic books I lay my hands on.

At the moment, I don't read any Manga but I can remember reading few online especially those naughty Manga drawing. These is one site that makes good ones and I visit it once in a while.

I've never read Manga, though I have skimmed through a few Japanese ones that I really didn't understand at all aside from the actions on the pictures. I think I would always probably prefer the anime since it requires a bit less effort, but admittedly I think it gets boring after a while especially when they make the story too drawn out because they need to milk the conversations as much as possible since it's cheaper to do it that way. Whereas in Manga you could go through stories at your own pace so it's not as slow or at least you're not as limited in terms of pace.

Me too. In our publication, we banned to draw manga. Because the shapes used in Manga faces are not realistic. (Sharp nose and chin). But I'm willing to learn to make and draw Mangas.

The interesting thing is, that I'm a comic book guy. Ever since I was a kid I've been obsessed with comic book series' such as Batman, Spider-Man, Superman, and Dead Pool. That being said, for some reason I just never could really get into mangas. I think I read one manga in my entire life, and that was a Dragon Ball Z manga. It is kind of strange, considering I absolutely loved the Dragon Ball Z anime, yet I barely finished even that one manga. For some reason they just never captivated me as much as the anime, and that goes for pretty much every series. Diehard fans would cringe at reading this, but that is just the way I am.

If you had to define some very specific differences between comic books and manga? What aspects would you highlight? I mean... Beyond the aesthetic question?

To this day I have never read anything that convinces me that they are two completely different things.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

DenisP
I definitely wouldn't say that they are all that different, and most of it just seems to be the cultural difference. Off the top of my head, I would say that generally the subject matters are different between Japanese mangas and American comic books. Comic books will usually revolve around a superhero or a group of heros, at least the more popular ones. Mangas don't seem to typically revolve around what would be considered "traditional" super heroes but instead feature a wider range of characters, the kind of characters that American comic books wouldn't really focus on. Then again I sort of have tunnel vision when it comes to American comics and rarely stray outside Marvel and D.C.

I kinda agree with you.

In my head, this works like this: comic books = extremely patriotic heroes (who usually work in teams) / mangas: heroes not so patriotic, but more human (who usually work alone).

I know these aren't the best concepts for the two situations, but I think that ultimately serves as a kind of summary for those who don't know much about these worlds.

The two of them are different entirely, comics are those super termed books with short storylines and uncomplicated terms. While a manga consist of animes of all kinds as far as it's animes, they are most times complicated, you can't just pick up reading it if you didn't follow their edition from the beginning. Both mangas and comics are books which exercises graphics to the fullest only their contents and type of drawing makes it different.

I don't really agree that manga is simply for getting ahead of an anime. There are plenty of manga series out there with no anime accompaniment and just as many fans of manga who aren't as keen about anime. It's like saying that books are only there for people who want to get a little more of the story after the movie. You can definitely be a fan of both, but reading manga doesn't mean you're doing it because of the anime.

Now for the actual question, just like in movies, anime tends to skip some parts of a manga for the sake of time, and in some cases it will add whole arcs of a story that never existed in the original manga to begin with. There are whole seasons of an anime that will be deemed non-canonical because the anime people will get impatient for the rest of the story and will just make up what comes next. It can get confusing when they decide to go back to the main storyline and tell their audience to just forget the last two seasons ever happened. Therefore, I have to say that I prefer manga when it comes to wanting a pure and original story, but I still enjoy anime and can appreciate the time and skill that goes into creating it.

I read mangas a lot, for so many years now and I have never seen a manga which isn't keen with animes, please can you make this point clear to me, I don't understand what you are trying to say. Manga differently has an anime in place with it, it is not like the normal comics you read, if you know of one send me the link to clear my doubts.

Yeah, in the same vein as books and movie adaptations, manga and anime generally have different audiences since some prefer the manga over the anime and refuse to watch it, while the converse is also true. For the general public, however, they usually just read manga when they really can't wait for the anime.
