A good friend of mine takes up drawing profession, he is a professional artist and all his works are exquisite. He makes use of pixel art to perfect his drawing works and till today, he has seen his work rated among the best work when compared with his competitors. If I had any skill in drawing, I would be taking up this field of profession.

That's really cool the hear Martinsx1!I think you can still become an pixel artist, its never too late to start doing what you love and what is currently actual on the internet and in the world.I think I might start this art profession my self.

Thanks for the wonderful encouragement my friend @MittensFX, I think I would have to pass on becoming a professional drawing artist at this current stage in my life. It's not that I wouldn't love to be but with the meticulous nature of artist work isn't something I would possibly execute and excel perfectly at the moment. I would just have to stick with being only an appreciator and a spectator of such beautiful creative work of art.

Wow that is cool. I have also tried making a bit of money using pixel art. I have tried to incorporate pixel art in prints for mugs, t-shirts and other trinkets. I do this in my spare time and only do it via order. It has helped me financially. For me, I can say that it is a good income generating hobby. Your friend will go a long way and maybe get a lot of opportunities because of his talent.

Pixel art is in a category of its own. It's unique and eye catching. The best feature about it is its cute graphics. I've noticed that many like it due to its resemblance to real life objects.

I'm actually a huge fan of pixel art. In my spare time I actually make my own pixel art sprites, backgrounds, and animations, all just for the fun of it.

If most pixel art fans are like myself, then they grew up playing video games on consoles like the Super Nintendo, which featured some of the most beautiful pixel art of all time. There weren't any consoles before or after it which made such great use of 16-bit pixel art. Recently, the retro look has been popularized in many indie titles such as Shovel Knight, Stardew Valley, and Undertale.

Like I said, I think video games play a big role when it comes to the appeal of pixel art. A lot of us wanted to make games growing up, but ended up finding different careers. Those of us who didn't pursue these dreams--but still have some knowledge with regards to art and design software--like to express these dreams with pixel art and animation.

I think it initially rode on the nostalgia that this type of art brought to other people as it's the way animation looked before the advancements in technology. From there, it became popular and other people began to pick up on the art form, and then they realize that it brought a different personality on its own and it could still work on other art forms.

That's so true. Pixel art just has a quirky feel to it. It's the perfect mix between retro and advanced animation. It can look both old yet futuristic at the same time. And yes, the nostalgia hype is real. Pixel animation is here to stay.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

treecko142
It definitely is here to stay. I can see two general schools of thought going into the future: one aiming for animations to become more and more realistic, while the other sticking to the unique art styles, with pixel art being one of them.

I'm seeing more of them recently on YouTube clips. They are also using the sound effects of the games where the pixel arts are used.

I think these pixel arts would be considered classic. I think they really aged well and would still be used in the future.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

DenisP
Yeah pixel art could definitely be considered classic, retro, or vintage.

As you had mentioned, the thing about pixel art is that it has aged really well, which is why many indie video games this days opt for a pixel art style. I mean, just look at the difference in graphical quality between the Super Nintendo and the Nintendo 64.

Sure, we're talking about a 16-bit console versus a 64-bit one, and yet SNES games look so much better. Yeah the Nintendo 64 has 3D graphics and polygons, but you can't say that N64 graphics look more visually appealing. In fact, I'd dare to say that N64 games look downright ugly, and I grew up with the darn thing.

Pixel art knows how to get more out of less, which is why it is still so popular, besides for nostalgia's sake.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

EfficientNinja
Yeah. I still like playing games with this type of graphics though. For me, 2D games age better than their 3D counterparts. 3D games look very good and realistic right now but after 10 years, we'll laugh at ourselves for thinking that game graphics won't improve anymore.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

DenisP
Oh most definitely. I remember back when the PlayStation 2 came out, I always thought to myself "Woah! Video games have gotten so realistic! I don't see how it can get better than this!" And then the next generation of games came out, and I thought the same thing once again. But now in the current generation, all I think to myself is that I can't imagine how graphics are going to get any better, but I know that they're definitely going to manage somehow. Although I think that graphics are heading less in the direction of "more polygons" and instead it's all about particle effects and physics now.

Agree, any time I check something on pixel, I feel this retro feeling, like when I was a kid and my video games where like that. The great thing, is that no matter how good quality is nowadays, there's still space for pixel art on those. Recently, my God daughter downloaded an app that is called No.Draw, and it's completely pixeled. The user is supposed to create art by using numbers, but the result is an amazing pixel art drawing, that is so retro and so modern at the same time.

I totally agree with you Ninja,I saw a lot of YouTube posts of pixel art being drawn, animated and used to make this popular games that players all around the world are playing.I think you might be right on the part that it might still be used in the future and ho knows when will it die actually.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

kammy143
That is so true. I guess that pixel art is one of those things that fits almost all generations and never seem to get old. I also think that these kind of art will still be used by future generations. It is one of the classics that fits the modern taste of people of any form and age.

Yeah, You're right, I watched some tutorials on YouTube and it's looks like very easy to use. I think pixel arts is needed if you want to have your own game. Most of the pixel artist coming from the influence of 90's games and just having fun right now to have their own.

Pixel art embodies that cute 80's vibe. The pleasant imagery, graphics, and animation. It makes a lot of us nostalgic.

Pixel Art has a retro effect so those 80's and 90's computer geeks and gamers has an affinity to it creating a good market.

There's a lot of Pixel Art designed couple shirts here as well as pixel mosaic art and it has an appeal that even the young generation also likes it.

Even though you can print pixel art on paper, clothes or even on canvas, Pixel art use a digital medium. In other words pixel arts are created on a screen. In order to create pixel art you need to be perfect in digital drawing and designing programs. The quality of your art depends on your skills in using a designing program.

For me, I think what attracts people the most is the simplicity of the designs. It adds a different kind o character to the piece of clothing, accessories or any inanimate object found in our surroundings. It could be so simple that it can be created by anyone or it could be so elaborate that it is takes a lot of time and effort to make.

Because I think pixel art somehow is very easy to use, and people grew up and influenced by pixel art video games. Pixel art also is less expensive software compare to other software, but still interesting.

Well I think it's because they discovered that pixelated images can create a form of art that is unique which is different from other styles. At first maybe we may think that pixelated is not good in the eyes because it's look like a low quality picture. Maybe one artist came up to the idea that it can be a form of art and with that they made it more interesting and attraction to other people.

I came to this thread not to share my knowledge of pixel art but to learn about pixel art. Pixel is "the smallest component of an image on a screen which appears a colored dot. The pixel art is created by creating many dots. Generally speaking, the greater the number of pixels per inch the greater the resolution

That is correct vinaya. That's why it is so complex and not an easy type of art that everyone can do.Thank you for sharing this information with us,the rest of the community members probably know about this, but for some that do not know this is an useful information.

Well, pixel art is limited to the digital art form. Digital is an art form that is now being accepted by artists who use traditional art form. Many critics of digital artist say that it is the machine that creates digital art and not the humans, therefore, the art itself does not have any value. However, this thought is being challenged everywhere.

Artist is really an artist and still will make an art evolution or an advance art but they also came up some of their ideas on video games like pixel games convert to pixel art because it is possible and many kinds of arts will be discovered along the way because arts is also a never ending career and discovery to give amusement to people.

Anything with a nostalgic feel can sell, that is how I assess Pixel Art. Those who have experienced the early days of computer technology and played first and second generation video games who are atleast middle aged if not old nowadays are aware about pixels and the best way to reminisce the old days is by embracing pixel art. Having said that, there's a big market for pixelated products and artworks nowadays and I think pixel art is here to stay.

I'm familiar with this kind of art being used.It is used mostly for gaming and animations.
I think it became popular when the game well all know,Minecraft, became popular.
Many more companies have started using that type of art. There are a lot of artists ho work on pixel art to get paid a lot of money.
Pixel art isn't something that is easy to do,it requires skill and talent.

Pixel art has been used decades ago. Ever since the first computer games are popularized, pixel art has silent but massive following. It is very simple but in the same time it is very complex. It can be considered as timeless, because no matter what genre, it find its way to be used or applied. I for one am very impressed how simple things can be so diverse.

I think the pixel art is already well known even during 90's, and already popular to animators and game developers, and yeah your right, pixel art is not really easy to do, you need a lot of patience to create your own game or animation.

Pixel art to me is always a throwback to the 80's, and I love it for that retro feel. I think perhaps that's why it's still so popular these days - it's something that often immediately transports you back to a simpler time.

I also just think it's a very unique and eye-catching form of design, so that fact probably helps it stay popular too!

I do agree that pixel art has a huge following from people who grew up in the 80's and even 90's and that would translate to tens if not hundreds of millions of people who can identify themselves with pixelart and that would translate to a whole new industry because the demand is there.

I don't know that much about Pixel Art but I really like it specially that Super Mario is one of the examples of Pixel Art (I guess because of how it was drawn in the old versions of Mario). Super Mario is my most favorite video game and I remember playing that when I was still 8 or 9. I'm 19 now and I'm in to more advanced animations, however whenever I see Pixel Art it gives me a lot of nostalgia of the past.

In marketing and sales, Nostalgia always sells, and that's the selling point of Pixel Art.

What better to define the 80's than Pixels, right? I mean it's the one thing I can think off that everyone knew during that era.

That's an interesting thought. I feel like it has a power over us. Most people alive right now have an idea of the 80's. I guess it's something has continued for a long time. Even the latest movie and TV show releases borrow a lot of elements using nostalgia.

I agree with you. It all depends on the concept that you're trying to hit. Sometimes, it's actually a hit. But sometimes when it is compared to a high form of art, it loses.

Pixel Arts successful return can be attributed to nostalgia, it reminds people of their childhood in the late 70's, 80's and early 90's. Then Pixelated artworks came out along with magazine covers, posters, album covers and desktop wallpapers, and even pixelated Tattoos. The most famous among the pixel makers is called eBoy also known as the grandfather of pixels.

How to create Pixel Art using Microsoft Paint.

Open Microsoft Paint

Pick a photo

Go to image-attributes and change the width and height to 150 each.

Click the Magnifying Glass Tool then Click the blank white space. Click the white space again and then click 8X so that the white space covers the whole paint screen.

Click on the pencil and choose a color and start drawing the outline of the pixel. Then after drawing the outline, begin to color the inside with the same color.

You can add some shade and highlight to make it look better.

Using the dotted rectangle put your pixel inside it and save it.

You just finished creating your first Pixel Art.

I remember doing pixel arts during my primary years in school where the only programs you can use are MS Dos and Paint. The teacher would ask us to get graphing paper and use it to shade the boxes and make our art. From there we would transfer it to Paint and print it. It was a very simple one but it made us feel like an expert when our art turns looking like a pro.

Those were the memories that come back to my mind when I see games that are made with pixel arts. With the technology today and such great improvements with computer graphics, it is nice to see kids of today’s generation still enjoying pixel art games.

Seeing pixel arts reminds me of my childhood days. Specially 90's, I remember how it is being used on my favorite sega game "tomb raider". It will reminds us a lot way back our childhood days.
And because it reminds us a lot of our childhood days, maybe people wants it back.
And artists can earn a lot from it actually. I have read an article before that people in our age wants to continue developing pixel art until now.

Pixel Art is a novelty these days, it has a retro effect that appeals to a lot of people specially the ones who grew up in the 80's and 90's and even the millennials seems to like it also. I thinks the appeal comes from the attachment of people to the computer age which became mainstream in the 80's and 90's.

Pixel art was actually very popular in the DeviantArt community way back when NintendoDS came out. People would export the pixels used in games and post them online for free. People like me who had all the time in the world out copy these pixel templates and animate our own animation frame by frame using MS Paint. Those were the days.

I think the idea of pixel art came from old 80's to 90's video games or retro games. Retro games from old console genarations doesn't have the realistic graphics we enjoy today at our current generation consoles but it has that nostalgia feel to it. Seeing those pixel art style game's still around today make's me think about those good old childhood memories I've had with my old friends. Those simple arcade controls and gameplay is actually relaxing or and alternate to some over complicated rules and controls of modern games today. I really love the pixel art graphics because it's more simple and developers can focus more on the gameplay than on the graphics.

These are the days of Pacman, the attari where most of it were created using pixel arts. Many people like this kind of art because it gives them a nostalgic feeling especially if you were born on 80's and 90's.

I think it mainly comes from nostalgia. Being able to make something new out of something that looks old gives you a sense of creativity but also like you're holding on and honoring your childhood. There's also a lot more that can be done with pixel art now than back in the 80's and 90's since our software is a lot more sophisticated, and we have more of a developed history of video games and animation to build off of.

I'm not sure if there was a person who catapulted pixel art into popularity. Anyway, pixel art became famous because it pays homage to everyone's favorite childhood pastime (which even extends into adulthood) - video gaming! It is also a well-loved art style because it works well with a wide range of themes, from cheery, colorful scenes to those with somber, nostalgic tones.

I don't know who started it but I still remember when I was in high school and got my very first cellphone which has a keypad. I was trying out each function then I got hooked on making pixel art. I have to pay to have one of those in my old cellphone so I made it myself instead. I will show you a sample but I already lost mine since my old cellphone is not working anymore.

Pixel art is still being used
