If your an Artist what would be your preferred medium?

If I where blessed with the hands of an artist I would probably do oil paintings in canvass.

Whenever I'm in an art gallery my favorite paintings are oil paintings, it has a more realistic feel and the technique used in painting with oil gives such depth in color making it visually enticing.

Glass Arts particularly Stained Glass is one form of art which piques my mind. It can be found on Windows of churches and monestaries in Britain dating back to the 7th century A.D.

Stained Glass is the art of arranging small pieces of different colored glass to form pictures and held together by a metallic design or metal frame. It's effect when hit by light is it illuminates the interior of a building making the designs vibrant with colors.

That is true! I love seeing these kinds of art whenever I get the chance to see one. Churches are some of the places where you can see these unique artistry. I do agree that there is a certain charm when light shines through stained glass. If given a chance, i would try it even just once in my lifetime.

My original answer for this question had been sculpting, but glass arts are another field of artistry that I've always found to be incredibly fascinating.

Even as a child, I used to watch the adults drink out of their fancy wine glasses, and I'd think to myself "How in the world does a human being manage to create something like that with their own two hands?".

Then funnily enough, as I got older and--umm--gained an "admiration" for cannabis, I was enamored by the skill and artistry behind making glass water pipes. It's a really difficult skill, not only in complexity but the hot conditions you must endure, but it is amazing nonetheless.

That would be really cool, I've watched a lot of videos about glass blowing and it's really amazing on how they shape melted glass by blowing into it to expand it and make wine glasses with it. It's truly an art which has to be mastered and perfected.

We used to do stained glass art in school, and it was one of the few lessons in art class that I really enjoyed, being someone who isn't really adept at the arts.

They are really unique mediums. Ancient times used this kind of medium for their buildings and churches. What I know is that stained glass was not only used for windows in churches rather it was also used in creating vase. It made me wonder on how they discovered this such kind of things. It is very cool medium actually.

I agree with you, it is really a beautiful medium for art but you really need to be careful with it.

That's really a good, I remember the first time I went to a church with that kind of art, I was really amaze.

This is a pretty darn good question. Hard for me to answer because I find each medium to be beautiful in its own way. I would never want to give up one for another.

That being said, I've always had a deep admiration for sculpting; wood carving/sculpting in particular. I've dabbled in photography, painting, and illustration to varying degrees of success. However, for me, sculpting has been like that beautiful girl across the room that you really like but are too shy to talk to. I've always wanted to dabble in sculpting but have been too intimidated by it and with no real clue as to where to begin.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Me too, but I am not really good with that kind of thing.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

DenisP
Yeah, me neither. I’ve had a moderate degree of success with drawing/painting, but working on 2D things is so much more different than 3D. Working with 3D mediums like sculptures takes an entirely different perspective.

It’s why I have an appreciation for people who even do stuff like 3D modeling for video games. There is just something about adding that extra dimension that makes it total game changer. I feel like people who can sculpt are also great at painting and drawing, but people who can paint aren’t going to necessarily be good at sculpting.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

kammy143
Just like you, I am leaning towards oil paints. I have already experienced working with these kind of mediums and though it takes a much longer time for me to finish compared to photoshop, I'd rather be painting something just to express myself through painting. I may not be that good of a painter , but I do enjoy it. If I had the time and money, I would make painting as my hobby.

I always wanted to be a sculptor because I admire how they can shape stuff like marble into looking like real people. I don't have the resources or the skill though, but it would be nice to experience sculpting.

I like the sculpting also. It looks like it's really hard to do, and needs a lot of time just to finish the art, and it's very expensive, that talent is one of a kind, I really like when it made of wood.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

treecko142
Yeah, the time it takes to create beautiful sculptures is one thing that discourages me from doing this stuff, as I feel that I don't have enough time or I would be lazy to finish the work I have started. It's really expensive too especially with the more classic materials.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Yeah, and unlike to other arts, you have to finish your product until everything or every details is still clear to your mind, to know where to start again after you sto, or else, it will gone, and will go back to new idea again.

You can use a lot of mediums when it comes to sculpting. Wood, clay, metal, marbles, stones and etc. I must say sculpting is one of the most interesting form of art. The end product is not easily accomplished.

I agree that oil painting can make beautiful and intricate pieces but as for me, I am more into watercolors because I love the way the pigments flow with the water and you can be spontaneous and make the design loose and less detailed but still create a beautiful artwork.

I would be still oil painting for me, I have had a good interest in painting when I was small, during my primary school days, I painted well with my crayon and water paints. On getting to adulthood, I took it to another level, even though I'm still learning how to paint in a program way, I still take time to acquire good collection of painted arts.

Wood curving for me. I'm a fan of wood curving. I like their arts, how they slowly curve the wood or trees to become one of a kind art.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

This is really good as well, but I always wonder how easy it is for these artists to do the wood carving considering the fact that it is stressful in my eyes. Another thing is that having such at home might not look that charming for me.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

You should have a proper place to do your wood curving, because it's gonna be messy to do that inside your home. Actually me, I'm just a beginner and never try to do my master piece in a big body of tree. the size of my work it's just very handy, just small.

Wood is a very good medium if one is a great fan of tactile objects. I appreciate sculptors because wood or stones are not that easy to manipulate. They really use time, patience and a lot of skills just to finish a certain project.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Yeah you're right, and most of their finish product or arts is one of a kind. They need to spend five or more months just to finish the life size art, and sometimes just one mistake, or if you broke the wood it's all gone you just wasted half a year for that garbage.

I have come to like the pencil paintings for they look simple and mature for me. The truth is that I really wanted to become an artist right from the days of my primary school days, but circumstances and the events of life really made me not to achieve that feat. I enjoyed drawing with pencil back in those days.

A friend of mine does glass etching and I've got one of his works in my living room it's titled Birds in the Fields and I admire his works. I like to try my hand on 3 dimensional colored glass etching sometimes but it's a very hard and laborious craft and the process to finish one takes up to a week or two for a small piece.

Stained glass are so gorgeous. I appreciate the craftsmanship of people who make these beautiful pieces of art. I see a lot of these in churches and old structures. I love looking at stained glass in our church specially during morning mass. The time allotted just to make those grand ones must take weeks, months or even years to finish.

Well I am not an artist, however, when I was in the teens, I tried my hands on painting. I even tried to enroll in an art school. When I painted I used poster color. However, I think oil is the best medium for painters. I like oil paintings. I have been to art workshops and watched artist use various medium and I think oil on canvas produces the best art work.

I'm actually not to bad with drawing things, it's just that it's one of those things that I don't really want to pursue and do. In terms of medium, can I count graphic design as well? It would be awesome to be able to be a graphic artist and be able to draw and design things on a computer or tablet. I've always been in awe of some of the things that people can design on a computer and a program like photoshop.

If I were an artist, I think I'd like my medium to be watercolors. There's something really beautiful and "chaotic" about watercoloring. It's hard to control water on a canvas, which gives it such an unpredictable nature and I find that intriguing.

I absolutely adore photography as well, and I try to do it as artistically as I can. So if you can consider that a medium in this case, I'd answer photos in a heartbeat!

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

paintings in watercolor are wonderful, however, the only problem I see with water color is the age of the painting. If you do not preserve the water color painting, it will fade in time. By the way, I think acrylic on canvas is also a good medium.

Hmm.. this is a really good question because I used to draw and paint a lot through my high school years but then I sort of stopped a bit due to so much work that I had to do in the university.

I guess I would just use pencil drawings though. I love how much you can express through a simple pen or pencil... The things that people draw using it is simple yet complex. Creative!

Water color painting is another good medium. It always gives me a sense of nostalgia every time I see water color art. It's also easier to learn and more affordable. Also you can make mistakes and edit it easily.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

aeon
Yeah, I also like that. I'm also a fan of water color painting. I saw some exhibit before about water color paintings, and it's so awesome. I really like how they mixed the colors, It's really hard for me to do that, I don't know what color to mix just to form another color which I need based on what I'm thinking.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Kakashi2020
Sometimes mixing the right color doesn't require mixing 2 different colors together. Sometimes, you just have to add water to lighten the color. Example, you can create light blue by mixing blue and white or you could just water down the blue color to achieve a toned down lighter tone of blue.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Right, the simple water could changes the impact of the color, from heavy to lite, I think the color mixing should need to study first before doing something great art using this water color painting.

When I was in college, as a fine arts student I had been creating a lot of drawings and paintings in different medium. When I was still in freshmen I really want the pencil/graphic pencil/ charcoal medium since portrait was my hobby since then. I also discovered that the pencil have different shades and functions. Our prof told us that we should used a light shade pencil when sketching so that whenever we made a mistake, It was easy for us to erase and he usually used F pencil or Hb pencil. When it comes to shading part, the b up to 9b is what we used and b being the lightest shade and 9b for the darkest shades of b pencils. Aside from pencil, we also used which we called "conte" it has different colors, and its texture is like a charcoal.

The first medium we used in painting was poster color or tempera, Its kinda hard, or no i mean not hard but the least favorite medium for me because it easily combined the colors. When the color was already dry and it became wet it either ruins the other part if your not careful enough. It either fades or blends the other or if some accident happen for example a water or coffee spill on your finished painting, then i will be able to say this to you--"Congrats on your finished painting! It was totally ruined by your carelessness." Just kidding but still unlucky for you tho. It was also happened to me and I cried coz' I spent 2 days to finished my art but I'm still lucky I am able to find a way to fix it although it was already ruined and messed up.. So i think if you prefer poster color then you have to buy a fixative spray ( this will help you to cover it with transparent glossy thingy to avoid loosing the colors or if you don't want to ruin your artwork.)

I also tried watercolor a transparent water based paint, and yeah its difficult at first but as long as you know or you have an idea on how it was use then i think it 's fine, it may not look cool for you at first or for others, as long as you are patiently practicing it, sooner or later you will find out how it will make it more appealing, pretty or cool and probably some of you will love this medium but the same as poster color it is easily fades /lose the color when become wet but I like the result or the texture of watercolor when it applied on watercolor paper. I think they are almost the same with gouache. What I have remember was gouache is like a combination of tempera and watercolor that was told by my prof.

My most favorite media is oil and acrylic. They are different from each other and obviously the oil paint is an oil base while acrylic is also a transparent water base just like the water color it is just that when acrylic dries, it hardens the paint and the texture is like it was made by plastic the same as oil but the differences between two are-- aside from oil and water based, they may differ in the amount of time in drying process. Oil has longer duration and need a lot of time before it dries but what i like the most about oil paint is its pretty much easy to use because it is smooth when you apply it into canvas. What i like about acrylic is, its easily dries your work which is very fit to the artists who are rushed.

Thanks for sharing your experience and knowledge with different mediums. I am not an artist but as a teenager, I liked to paint with watercolor and poster color. water color is nice, however, watercolor fades easily, therefore, the professional artists do not use this medium too much. Oil is expensive medium. Perhaps this might be the reason for the popularity of acrylic, apart from quick drying.

I have a good friend who builds scale models of everything eversince we were young Scale Modelling has been his passion and art form. He made quite a lot of money doing this. His clients are mostly property developers, real estate companies and top architects which needs scale models for their different projects. Scale Models are being used as miniature visual representations of both present and future projects like houses, commercial establishments and vertical structures to name a few.

A single piece depending on its size and scale may cost $1000 to $20000 easy back a decade ago. Now we already have big 3D printers that can do the job faster but the cost remains the same.

Am not an artist, I barely know much about art so pardon me if I get the names or description wrong.

Sculptures to me are the most expressive forms or medium through which an artist brings imagination to life. Correct me if am wrong, but sculpting os probably one of the most painstaking piece of art to develop. The mare sight of a well crafted sculpture shows the amount of time, effort and thought the artist put into making something with attention paid to very tiny details. If I had to choose, I'll go with sculpting as my preferred for of art.

The tattoo artist also is one of the hardest form of art, No time for mistakes. You really need to focus on every details and the use of needle. You should be always aware about the things to use and be sure it's all clean and dispose it properly and do not reuse the needle again.

Yeah, It's really hard to commit even just a simple mistake for being tattoo artist. Your canvass is human body, the tattoo artist should work 100% always, and should work under the pressure.

It really gives you pressure and goosebumps if you suddenly made a mistake. My tattoo artist friends said that they practice tattooing on pigs skin before they practice the actual human skin. So I guess if I'm gonna try it,I need a lot of pig's skin maybe 20 plus meat lol.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

aeon
Really? Is the pig skin is a little more thick than to human skin? I think they need a little pressure to the needle for that, But well it's a good canvass to test the consistency of the hands, just make sure that the pig is already dead.

Of course, it must be dead or else that pig might attack, chase and run after me. I am not a fast runner so I guess I'll be dead if that happens lol. Art is not my thing at all until i tried it... but of course it's not really easy. It's hard figuring what materials i have to use and how to use it. Not all artist has a smooth running's just like in life one should experience first before knowing whats good or not . The last part is how passionate are you in your craft. The last thing you can do is quit your work because you think it's a questionable outcome and future. The first thing you should feel when doing your art is joy...
