RUMOURS-"in every rumour there's always an atom of truth". TRUE OR FALSE?

You've all heard of many rumours spread by the general public and accepted by all even though they were never real proofs that they happened. Some of these rumours are really absurd. I wonder how people even get their heads around such silly things. Below are some of such rumours I grew up to hearing before finding the facts out.

Even though he died July 20, 1973, Bruce Lee was one of the most famous actors during the 80's - which happens to be my childhood days. Kids back then spread the rumours had it that he died due to excess muscles in his body..Lol

Bob Marley was an idol known for his music and political stands for justice. His one of the many personalities closely associated with marijuana. Rumours had it that he died from excess marijuana intake..Lol.

During the 90's in the prime of Nigerian football, India played a match against Nigeria. Rumours had it that India scored a total 99 goals with the use of spiritual powers. They said if Nigeria could score just 1 goal, then the match was theirs. One Nigerian player tried but the ball turned into a very big stone, still he played and managed to score but lost his leg. Nigeria won..Lol

Have you heard any absurd rumours before that a lot of people believed it to be so?

Don't spoil the fun..Share those silly rumours you've heard.

NB: Bruce Lee died mysteriously after shooting and before the premier of his movie, Enter the dragon.

Bob marley died from cancer caused by an infection from a toe injury he got while playing football many years before.

"the truth could be the part for dying but not the cause of the death"

...that's so very true. Just like I said above, in every rumour there's always an atom of truth. I probably should have contacted you before putting out this post and maybe I would have use the quote above.Lol

mildredtabitha
Lol. I never knew it could be used as a quote but now that you mentioned it, it really looks like a quote. Thanks for the remarks.

I believe this could be true, but the "atom of truth" does not necessarily have to relate with the rumor that is being spread. People who spread rumors about others just like to add in a bit of truth to make something more believable, like relating stuff from a person's life that may be relevant to the rumor.

Lol, Lmao, it's so funny that I believed in all the other tales you listed here but in another version, I'd believed them when I was younger and when I got older I had to question the authenticity of all of them only to find out they were all false.

I don't believe in that phrase, the only rule to this is that in every rumours there is false or truth to it, it doesn't work together just like a burning iron being placed on ice it explodes, there are so many things especially rumors that even though we hear we need to think about it before spreading it around.

There was one I heard when I was younger that Santa came from the north pole, with all those elves and sleighs but no one saw it, this is a rumour which is now part of children's traditional believe.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Barida
Yeah, just like the Indian and Nigerian match. I had to laugh hard when I later discovered that it was all false. Some rumors were quite absurd that one can even see through them when getting older.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Adesuwa08
Nigerians sure no how formulate stories with no logical reasoning to it, sometimes whenever I hear of such things I just giggle to it all, they sure did lie to a lot of generation we all grew up with those funny tales which just gives us humour and reasons to laugh when we get older.

The Nigeria versus India match is just too filled with too much fallacies, I wonder how someone will just sit down to formulate things like this and everyone gets to buy the whole rumor, while they make it spread like wildfire. ???????

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Martinsx1
@Adeswa08 well actually I would give so much credit to such people, it's actually not that easy as it appears to make up a good lie and turn it into a contagious rumor which like all the state would get a hint and heat of it. What do you think about this?

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Martinsx1
@Brida That one really got me, when I was still a novice, I actually believe that tale only for me to get wiser as an adult and saw it was just cooked up lies to make us laugh.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Rumu
That's unarguably true, people tend to spread rumours just heard without actually confirming the authenticity of the said subject. The invent of social media platforms have only made it worst as rumours doesn't take ages to circulate like during the old days.

To the subject of santa, i don't think we should call it a rumour per say, maybe a decent rumour to caption it. We all believed in santa when we were younger but found out differently when we got older. It's the thrill of believing in santa that makes it a decent rumour.

There are so much tales I will like to share concerning your thread, but each time I recall it skips me when I try to remember, oh yes it just came back to me now.

During the ebola time which was spreading across Africa, after some of the victims travelled away to another country in the hopes of getting cure for the disease, that was how one was able to bring the virus all the way from Liberia to Nigeria (the man came to meet one of our doctors here who said he had a cure for it, to rewind time remember it was Liberia the Ebola virus came from) .

There was a lady who came out on social media to say that Ebola could be cured through drinking and bathing with salt, this is how a majority of Nigerians started patronizing their hard earn income for salt, so many people lossed their life as a result of this. After like a week the lady who stirred up the whole controversies came on social media to apologize for the false claims which cost a lot of people's money/life, that's depending how individuals took the story well enough and how they got enough salt. All these gets so annoying, people sometimes take advantage of people's fear and circumstances, there are more if I recall them I will share them with you

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Martinsx1
@Adeswa08 I vividly remember those moments here in Nigeria, it was really crazy with the incidents of salt and water drinking.

Sometimes I wonder if people lack just simple logical reasoning. Salt is alkaline and it's no way medicinal to curing ebola.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Adesuwa08
Sometimes, our logical reasoning fails us that's a sign of the human thinking capacity going astray, lol.

The people who bring forth these rumors sure know the majority of folks they target, so many lifes have been lost due to rumors, albeit it will never stop, as more keep popping up on a daily.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Martinsx1
Rumors are simply made up assumptions but that doesn't mean some part of it aren't true. What you are referring to is probably fairy tales which are just made up lies and stories about something or someone to be told for several reasons.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Adesuwa08
Not all rumors are lies, there are atom of truth in all thr rumors that gains enough of media attention and public analyst, if you see all rumors as lies you are simply just trying to avoid the truth.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Rumu
You just made a very good point which has been the focal point of the topic all along. It beats my imagination whenever I hear some certain rumours being publicly denied in the media by the subjects of such rumours - are they trying to hide something? How comes an ordinary rumour has stirred up public statements? Just like the topic reads and as you've clearly agreed, there's always an atom of truth in every rumour, simple.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Steve5
I think what it means is that there's some truth to what's being said. It may have been misunderstood and twisted to some awful lie, but there's some semblance of truth from where this rumor came from.

That's why it's better to get proper context before reacting. False assumptions and conclusions often result from lack of understanding.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Some rumors sprouts from the truth. Some rumors are completely baseless. For example, it is rumored that JF Kennedy was killed by Russians. The rumor is based on the fact that Lee Harvey Oswald, the man who murdered Kennedy had links with Russia.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Adesuwa08
Yeah you are right there are rules of exception to rumors, that is why I said rumors could either be true or false they don't work hand in hand together, there are some rumors we reject even though it is a simple truth. Most people stick with rumors which are obviously not true, rumors are like wildfire they sure know how to spread lol.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

vinaya
Rumors might be completely false, however, some rumors seem to be so true that you might be willing to believe it. For example, you can see a lot of rumors surrounding the moonwalk, they say a man never made to the moon and the footage that we see was shot in a lab.
Another rumor sat that the events of 9/11 were created by Bush Administrations. The logic presented with these rumours look so true that you may start believing in them.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Adesuwa08
There are other versions to this stories /rumours you listed above, I have often wondered about the possibilities of there being two moons in the solar system, and how come the Simpson's cartoon (Homer Simpson cartoon) was able go give a vivid description of 9/11 years before it happened.

In the picture of Neil Armstrong (the first man to visit the moon), at the background we can see him standing on the surface of the moon, while another moon is being shown also. could it be that he never visited the moon like you said about the rumors, then if he did how come there was another moon in the pics(or was it Photoshopped) it is quite confusing.

The Simpson's cartoon have made a whole lot of predictions that were never taken seriously, but today we see all of it coming into be, or maybe this cartoons are giving details so it could be aired so to tell humanity more of their awaiting faith.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

vinaya
The other moon in the picture of Neil Armstrong is not a moon, but the earth. I guess.
Recently, there was another rumor. People rumored that the space jump was also not real but a hoax.
There are many rumors around us.
In 2001, the royal family in my home country was killed by Crown Price. It is rumored that the Prince did not kill the Queen and Kind, but a man with the mask of Prince actually murdered the royal family.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Martinsx1
@Adeswa08 That a topic is a rumor means it's a general idea and public discussions, so therefore it's bound to spread and sprint all round that society like the fastest man alive Usain Bolt.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Martinsx1
This is totally agreeable @vinaya even it's known as rumors but there are some that contains elements of truth if looked at it very closely. The only mistakes people make is carry the rumor hook line and sinker just like that without accessing it and begin to spread it.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

vinaya
Some rumors are just a figment of the imagination. I once spread a rumor on my family that I saw a ghost in my farmhouse. This was completely baseless, but my family members believed. It was just a prank of a teenager. However, some rumors arise from the truth. Some rumors are the truth covered by false assumptions.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Martinsx1
@vinaya you are creepy as well as funny. I'm sure your family had to go into serious prayers back then as a result of the ghost prank. Although I believe in ghosts, I have actually seen one or should I say it's my imagination that played pranks on me. This is actually the reason why I have strong beliefs on demonic possession.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Tronia
No, I don't think that the rule is true. Instead of that rule we have a similar saying that in every lie is a bit of truth. But anyway, rumours are usually developed from people's mind.

Sometimes out of pure imagination then other times to cause harm such as the yellow pages rumours.

But the ones you have listed are all pretty funny, haha. Wish I knew some of the silly ones but I don't.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

vinaya
yes, rumors develop from people's mind. However, rumors may not come out of thin air, they need seeds. The seeds for rumors are usually the truth. Sometimes rumors are an exaggeration of the truth. When I was a child it was rumored that our queen was in love with a certain singer but left him and married to the king. Since the queen left the singer, he became a drunkard. I even wanted to ask a police officer whether this was true or not. I did not have courage.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Rumu
Hahaha. That's a new one, I haven't heard that one before. I also agree with you on the sayig that rumours sprout out from truth sometimes. But still, some people especially pathological liers come up with some absurd things from within their selves and begin to share with people as if it were a confirmed news. Believe me, I've met a couple of people with such characters.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Martinsx1
@vinaya That's a very funny story or rumor if I should put it that way. There are no limits to what people can hear in the name of rumor which can basically be lies but the thing is that it's funny listening to them.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Adesuwa08
But there are some rumors which gets to be passed around and later it turns out true, more like the world power leaders hiding things from us and the entire world, they act like they are trying to protect something that we don't know of except them. How come some rumours turn out to be false but simply just reality, that means that rumors are not just things made up by the mind, rather they are things that they don't want us to know about especially when it turns out true.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Rumu
Yes. But like you said, "some" rumours not all.

In the context of what you are saying, I like to term such as "conspiracies". I think it explains better any government cover ups which the populace do not believe the official explanations.

Pathological liars haven't been studied and found to be capable of making up and sharing lies which were later found to be real events...Lol

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Martinsx1
@Tronia I agree with you on this note completely and I would also chip in the in as much as in every lie there is a truth in it, so it is with all truth, it contains some lies as well to suit the teller.

Imagination is one of the basic means of developing rumors and they are silly sometimes the things we get to hear. I'm looking forward to the best rumors of 2018.

I think it your topic is very much related with Conspiracy Theories I guess. There are indeed a lots of them, and yes, some are very funny to think about, one like Avril Lavigne is dead and that the one we're seeing is a clone? lol. Some are very intriguing like the Area 41 where they say US government studies about aliens or stuff like that. Others are very offensive like Jesus and Mary Magdalene had a child and they even made a movie about it. And there are lots of these rumours or theories but you have to examine them very well before determining truth or false. I do believe some are true but are just denied or whitewashed by some people.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Rumu
No, I doubt they sound like conspiracy theories, but yes, they are a lot of conspiracy theories out there with the majority of them being false. I've heard about are 51(not area 41 like you stated above), unfortunately or should I say fortunately, am a believer of that theory. Why? Because one, you can't find a place like that on the map. Secondly, I've seen so many eye opening documentaries with substantial evidence revealing the existence of area 51 and the operations being carried out there.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Adesuwa08
I believe in area 51 too, there is even a lot more to it they are not telling us, this world powers sure know how to control people and make them unaware of the truth.

Area 51 is not even in the map of the world nor United States though it exists, I heard that's where aliens are being kept to train people and manufacturer inventors that are not know, there is a lot of conspiracies to it too with even the Special Intelligence Officers debunking the proves of it.

Like I said earlier, there are so many rumors that are not just rumors for they exist, I feel the reasons why they make this rumors come to the public, is so that we can doubt it even more giving them a upper hand to continue with the activities, without having much attention focused on them.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Martinsx1
@Adeswa08 I believe why it's basically rumors with no facts for people to have is because of the issue of panic. Have you considered what would be the reaction of the general public should they find out that aliens exist in this world? Forget that we are all talking about it freely here, but believe me when I tell you, most people here won't be comfortable with it.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Martinsx1
@Rumu I believe such places are called black op site and no even all the government personnel have the clearance to know about such locations or what is going on there. It's above their pay grade and the same thing is applicable to the general public, all we have is just rumors.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Rumu
Very true i must agree with you. Correct me if am wrong, i think it was during the reagan administration, he found out about area 51 and sent some agents to survey the place but were denied entrance, he had to threaten them saying he would send a battalion of soldiers there before they allowed his agents in. What they saw in there still remains a mystery till date. That's a story i saw once in a documentary

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Martinsx1
That's exactly what I'm trying to say, as you can see even after getting to know about the area 51, no public statement was made.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Rumu
Exactly, no public statementhas been made till date to enlighten the populace and clarify if what heard arerumours or actually the truth .

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

kammy143
Exactly! Rumors are rumors, though there is some truth into it, it doesn't mean that you should believe it. There is nothing like getting the real facts rather believing in something that is shallow and without certainty. Better get into the root of it or get a second, third or more opinions rather than sticking to one.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Martinsx1
Haha @kammy143 I think having to very a rumor means that you know the source of it in the first place. But as we all know, it's almost impossible to know the source of most rumors unless it's the one started by you personally.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

kammy143
Hmm. The thing for me is to have the options to really seek the truth. It's a given that the root rumors are almost impossible to trace but in the same the word "almost" must also come into mind. There is a possibility that one may know to source and also make a way to resolve it. For example, your is a the topic of a certain rumor that can really compromise his or her stature in life, would you just believe it? And wouldn't you want to do something about it? In the long run the best thing is not to believe it at once and also make an effort to learn more about it and take action. Just saying.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Martinsx1
It's very correct calling such saying conspiration theories although there are some that are true and some lies. Just like one that is flying around ever since Donald Trump won the United States presidential election, which it's being rumored that the Russian had a hand in the election and putting him in the presidential seat. No one has come out with proof on this to support the assertion.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Rumors should always be taken with a grain of salt. Most of them are either false, or heavily exaggerated. Best to get the story from the source or someone close to it who you can trust.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Barida
The exaggerated rumors are those that hurt me the most. I mean when people write or say things out of proportion, it makes me wonder what is really wrong with them all.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Judas2018
You should run quickly from people like that. Before they take you and your reputation down entirely.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

kammy143
True, best thing to do is to find its roots, confront the people spreading the rumors and take action to clear your name.(if you are the one being involved) This is a serious matter that shouldn't be brushed off so easily. Others tend to go under depression because of these false speculations and many do suffer because of them.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Martinsx1
@Judas2018 I doubt running away from such people is going to prevent one from still hearing such crazy rumors, the best thing to do is overlook anything you hear that you haven't verified yet to be honest truth.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Judas2018
It won't prevent the rumors from being heard but, people who spread rumors usually end up targeted by angry individuals or caught in someones cross-hairs because of what they've done. So if you're still associating with someone who engages in that sort of gossip, you would suffer a pretty bad fate if an angry mob caught you with them. They'd assume you're in cahoots. Even if things didn't take such a terrible turn? Them thinking you're in league with the rumormonger, would hurt your overall reputation in the long run. All a person has in life, is their name after all.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Martinsx1
@Barida It's a shame that most people aren't caring about the effects of what they spill out in the public. Take for instance, there was a time in Nigeria, I think it's an October month when it was rumored that there is a certain vapor release in the atmosphere which is harmful to the body and the only remedy for its prevention is bathing with salt. It was later nicknamed salt day in the country. I believe 99% of families in the country took bath that morning using salt water, to be honest I did so as well.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Rumu
That's very true. I remeber the salt incident. How much crazier than that can it get?

That wasn't the only salt incident, even during the ebola crisis the same was broadcasted and a lot of people went ahead to drink excess salt in water and even further bathing with it too which resulted to some deaths across the country.

some rumours can be life threatening I must say.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

kammy143
True, it is a case of he said, she said. If ever someone tells you something, before believing it make sure you go to the source. Don't believe at once and look tor the truth of a second opinion.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Judas2018
Another complicated issue with rumors are some people hear a story, and then legitimately forget how it 'actually went.' So when they retell it to someone else - their version is not even close to what actually happened. Other people remember the original version of a story quite well, but for personal gain, mean-spiritedness, or just for kicks - decide to tell someone a totally different version of original events. Sometimes, it's hard to tell which factor is actually at play.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

kammy143
That is very much true. People to make their own twist and turns when it comes to telling a story. As if it could go better or grater than the original. The sad thing is, sometimes these stories can make or break a person or a business. Sometimes it could go for the better and sometimes it falls out to the worst.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Martinsx1
I think the best solution so far for this is to stick to what you know and is very sure about and not go having your head fixated on one rumor that you are not sure of.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Martinsx1
@Judas2018 The truth is that most people don't know how to tell what they heard exactly as they hear it. In the process of doing so, they either knowingly or unknowingly add or remove some details in the story which makes a mockery of the whole story.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Rumu
That's very true I must say. A lot of people do that. They forget the exact way an information was given then they retell an almost but complete different version of the information to other people. The worst of it is that some don't actually forget, they delibrately twist the information to better serve their personal purpose.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Martinsx1
Yeah @kammy143, if the information is not verified, there is no need giving it any thought in the first place because it's definitely going to be a complete waste of one's precious time.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

kammy143
I don't think so. I for one, I wouldn't want to stay put and brush it off if my reputation or anybody that I care for is at stake. I for sure would get to the bottom of it in any possible way I can. But, if I have nothing to do with it or I and my loved ones wouldn't be compromised, then maybe I'll just let it be. There is nothing wrong in taking a second opinion or giving the benefit of the doubt. I'd rather be rational than gullible.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Martinsx1
Definitely, if my name is being gossiped with and it tarnishes my image or reputation I must surly get to the bottom of it.

This actually happened to me one time back, someone started a rumor that I planned to have him killed. I made sure he paid me damages for denting my image and also sign an affidavit for me.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Martinsx1
Well said @Judas2018, it's best to simply take rumors with a little bit of doubt because certainly a huge part of it is just made up to have something people are gossiping about. It's only that ones that could be verified that should be taken seriously.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Barida
In as much as I feel that in every rumor lies the truth, we shouldn't discard the logic that some rumors might be on the ground to tarnish the image of someone and that's the reason I don't believe every rumor that goes around.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Rumu
Well, I agree with you on the fact that some rumours are put out with the sole intent of given a false persona about someone. But still the truth remains, be it false or not, some rumours carry more truth than the so called truth itself.

Asides all said, I think one has to be very careful when relaying or conversing certain unconfirmed information. You never can tell where such information is coming from. Take whatsapp for instance, people are fond of broadcasting infos in the name of being active and reaching out to people. A vast majority of those infos are either incorrect or unconfirmed.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Barida
Rumu, I never disputed the fact the some rumors have got iota of truth in them, but the thing I'm trying to say is that we've got to u understand that some are merely on the ground to taint the image of someone.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

This is so true @Rumu, I have witnessed such even on Facebook where someone started a post rumor of a young lady who has HIV and was getting lots of people infected. The message went viral to the extent I believe it got to the family members of the girl.

It was days later that another post surfaced from the particular girl in question saying she is not HIV positive with a copy of her Lab result from a government hospital University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital. It was really a shame someone went to that extent to ruin the girls image.

Me too. Although I didn't think about it that way at first, I agree that some rumors are meant to make someone look bad. I also rarely pay attention to rumors about me.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Rumu
If we were to always give a damn about rumours being said about us, people will definitely have more enemies than friends. I personally too don't worry what people say about me be it true or false. Some rumours have the tendencies of dragging you down. The best we can do is shut our ears towards any pervertness.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Barida
It shouldn't be right to stand on the ground that you don't listen to rumors about for some might have some element of truth. The aim is to ignore those that are baseless.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

People have been proven scientifically by character and every other personal distinctive traits to be different. Be it facts or baseless, I stopped listening to rumours ever since it was said that the united states never made the trip to the moon.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Just like I said before, paying heed to such disgusting rumors is simply a waste of time and energy. It's only going to add stress in one's life, so I try as much as possible to exclude myself from such.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Rumu
Yes. Paying heed or attention to some very disgusted rumour is a complete waste of time. This is why I never give a d### on anything said about me, as long as it has no truth to it.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

kammy143
Rumors are circulating exaggerated ideas with doubtful origins. I thing spreading them is really overrated and unethical. For example, a person saw someone who had a small injury... when he or she tells the story to another individual it will gradually escalate to something more. Thus, the small injury will become an accident and that accident will result into death. Rumors gone wrong really ain't pretty.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

That's so true actually! This reminds me of our old neighbors. It was an elderly couple and the woman always spied down her window and took notes of things people did, every single day. Then whenever she went into town she would spread weird rumors and gossip the people. It was really sad knowing it because she seemed like a nice lady.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Rumu
Thank you making such illustration, am talking about the story of your one time neighbour who deliberately writes things about people then goes out and shares falls information about them to others. That's the point I was trying to explain when I spoke about pathological liars...@barida. Do you get it now?

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Martinsx1
It's actually the same thing going round and round. Of course yes in every rumor which are lies and speculations there are some measurable atom of truth in it and also in every truth, there are lies interwoven within it to soothe its teller.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Barida
That's the point that I was trying to make in the sense that some rumors are basically tweaked to favor those telling them. I always judge from a fair angle.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Yeah, it's like passing a cake to a series of cake decorators. One would say, "hey, I could make this cake look better." so he/she would add something into it, then the process would happen again and again and the cake gets over decorated.... ok, now I am hungry.

I disagree. I think this might be true in most cases since rumors tend to start from a small kernel of truth that gets blown up when not addressed, but there are still some cases when rumors are just started by people who want something out of it so they just fabricate something completely fictional. I would say that this is almost always the case but definitely not always so I wouldn't say that every rumor has some truth to it and maybe just say that some or most of it does.

There is some logic to what you have said. Just like to what I have commented before, it sometimes starts with something true then get blown out of proportion. A morsel of truth, made grand by people who passes the story to others. Or, sometimes it is done just for strategy. Businesses does this kind of strategy all the time to get word across and get people's attention.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

We are both saying the same thing. The beginning of your comment says it all.

In every rumour, there's always a "kernel" / atom of truth.

I don't think so, because the terms "every" and "always" aren't in my statement. My version leans more towards speaking in terms of it being true in most cases but not all of them. Most rumors must have some kernel of truth but there are some that are completely bogus and fabricated by people who have something to gain out of starting a complete lie to destroy someone else's reputation without any hint of truth.

It is true that there is some truth in every rumor. The truth could be the part for dying but not the cause of death just like the examples you have given.

I mostly don't pay attention but I can take my time to listen to rumors but not believe them. Sometimes I do believe but then I change my mind. I also never have time to research so I can know the actual truth especially if the rumor revolves around a celebrity.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

There are some cases wherein people do over exaggerate things. For the examples given before by me, though it is just metaphorically stated, it does sometimes exist. All in all, not all rumors end up good. and if you really look up into it you'll be surprised how some rumors really have really gone out of proportion.

Not knowing the background what we consider as rumour could in fact have an element of truth. Why would anyone for example say that our first PM had illicit relationship with Lady Mount Batten if there was no truth in it? (lol)

Some of those rumors might be assumption that might be true or false in some cases. So, claiming that this event happened might be as as a result of some things that took place.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

The majority of this types of rumours are actually true in a way. You can see that most of this types of rumours never get any much attention, i mean we don't get to see or hear any public statements being made to clearify the populace, if it were ever made then it'll probably be denied as expected.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

You just made a perfect illustration giving a direct explanation of what the entire quote"IN EVERY RUMOUR THERE IS ALWAYS AN ATOM OF TRUTH", on the topic above. You wouldn't have made it any clearer. Just as stated on an earlier comment above - Some circulating rumours carry along with them more truth than the so called truth itself.

I think that most rumors started out as the truth and then each time someone else passes on the story they add to it. And before you know it the rumor is so far from the truth that it's laughable. That's why whenever I hear a rumor I go straight to the person and ask them about the rumor going around and they usually straighten people out.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Glad to read that you always take the best step of approaching the people concerned about whether the rumor is false or true. That is the only way to be sure of what we hear about them.

@Barida, I know you're a srong advocate of such decission and I agree with you this time around. But still, it's a no go for me. I really don't care what bad things people say about me.

This is another good insight talking about a typical kind of common rumour which gets spread every now and then.

Some folks are in the habbit of always adding a little or more fake details when speaking and sharing details of an actual occured event there by reducing or distorting the authenticity of an imformation. I believe a lot rumours which carries morethan an atom of truth in its context are likely started in this manner.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Well, this is not always true, but unfortunately sometimes rumors are just a big enhanced part of a simple small truth. So, every time you hear a rumor, then the best thing to do is to check out and make sure of the source of it, to then spread it. I've learned that trough the years, and believe me, we better search before make any opinion based on a rumor.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I agree with you on the fact that "rumours are just a big enhanced part of a simple small truth".

Just like I said to someone in his comment above, I think I should have contacted you before putting out this thread. Why? Because you just gave me a second best quote on this thread.

It's similar to "All jokes are half-meant."

That's the painstaking reality in our society. We love to talk about other people and believe a certain percentage even it's not proven yet or even entirely false. Maybe we love to see things out of the norm, good or bad, something out of this world, exemplary and to make our lives better out of our boring lives.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Judas2018
That's very true tiffiecute. People with little to nothing happening in their own lives, practically feast on damning information about other peoples once it's released. Even before they investigate the validity of the accusations.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

That's a very typical example of another common type of rumour being told on a daily basis, especially on social media. People have become very accustomed to the habbit of sharing damning information without actually confirming the facts.

In the old days that may be true but now, modern times dictates otherwise. To give you a good example there's all the lies in social media and the government.

Nowadays it's all about misdirection and fabrication. There's a lot of news and write-ups that are made just to target and destroy a person's reputation.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Very true I must say referring to the part of misdirection and fabrication. History has a lot to say about such. I've personally experienced the nature of such rumours, trust me it wasn't funny at all. This is the sole reason why I now do not care much what people say about me as well as am able to come through with certain proofs to show otherwise if need be.

So the rumor was that Bob Marley died as a result of excessive marijuana intake, yet the truth was that he died from a "cancer caused by an infection from a toe injury he got while playing football many years before." While I don't disagree with the fact that this is indeed true, where is the atom of truth here? Did he sustain the toe injury as a result of being toasted from too much marijuana and was too lazy to put on shoes while playing soccer? I don't see the connection, haha.

Rumors are awful little things, and typically I choose to not even register them in my mind, so honestly I can't even recall any saucy rumors at the moment.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

The thread reads: "In every rumour there's always an atom of truth, true or false?"

I guess you failed to notice the "true or false" part of the topic which happens to be the focal point of the subject.

Let's even go with It your way of thought. Rumour says excess marijuana, while facts states cancer from a toe injury while playing football. Do a simple search on bob marley and you'll find that after breaking up with his band, went solo and started making money, he moved to the best part of town bringing along the ghetto with him. The place was like a shrine housing tens of people with every single activity influenced by marijuana. It was during one of those moments he got injured playing ball right in front of the house. Because of his constant intake, he neglected the injury which later killed him.

Did I make any connection?

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

First off, I'm sorry if I've offended you in some way but there is no need to reply in such a patronizing manner.

"I guess you failed to notice the "true or false" part of the topic which happens to be the focal point of the subject."

I didn't fail to notice anything. I deliberately skipped past it as your post doesn't directly address that topic whatsoever. You wrote out several rumors and then debunked them, but in no way discussed whether or not they had any truth to them, which you should have if that is your focal point. Judging by the contents, a title such as "Do you know any rumors that turned out to be false?" would have been more appropriate. Then the only question you asked was if we have heard of any absurd rumors. The title doesn't reflect the actual topic of your post, therefore I chose to discuss the contents instead and ask you whether you see an atom of truth in this or not.

And no you didn't make a connection. You made an assumption. As the saying goes in statistics, correlation does not equal causation.

In any case, I apologize if there was a misunderstanding.

There may or may not be that is my answer. In everyday offline life that may be true because wherever theres smoke there must be fire ( fire meaning either a house is burning or someone's having an outdoor barbeque.)
What I'm trying to say here is it all depends on the instigators perception, motivation, declaration and credibility. (Would you believe a compulsive liar or a person / entity of ill refute.)

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Over the years, entities have been proven to be the worst blatant liars of all time, governments for example. Yes, a large majority of rumors are started by persons with ulterior motives, but the remaining percentage can't be ignored.
In saying so, I'll like to quote you on your words, "wherever there's smoke, there must be fire" which simply translates to the topic of discussion, "there's always an atom of truth in every rumor".

Exactly what others are trying to point out above, but believe it or not, some rumors actually carry a bit of truth along with them. Just as quoted in one comment above in a death instance, "the truth could be the part of dying but not the actual cause of death".

Correct RUMOURS-"in every rumour there People are adding something to their stories just so people will listen.
But anyway, we can say that in a rumor there's always an atom of truth. But not in every rumor. There are rumors spreading just to make up a story of a person to ruin his name. But there are still those that I agree has an atom of truth, it's just that some people are adding something to make it more believable and more powerful to ruin someone's reputation.

It can be both true and false. Rumors are actually made up stories. It can be a story made up from nothing. Just a result of someone's imagination made to spread for a reason. On the other hand, there can be rumors that are made from actual truth and has been altered or blown out of proportion.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Rumors are sometimes real stories blown out of proportion. Most of the time it's because of the source or how many times the information was passed on. So, it's possible that there's an atom of truth in some cases. They often say, if there's smoke, there's fire. But we can't deny that there are unscrupulous people who can make up an entirely untrue story just to defame someone.

Rumores sometimes true sometimes not true. It is depend the situation and the person itself. What I believe in is that if theres a smoke theres a fire which is similar to humors. We cant please people to make rumors. They used to it and they will never ever get tired to spread humors.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Kakashi2020
That's an old saying and is logical because if you can smell smoke then something must be on fire right? But when it comes to rumors, it might be true or it might be fiction. It really depends on the whole situation. As we all know news and information can be fabricated and or manipulated / distorted but the I do believe that the core idea or truth or subject of a rumour there lies an iota of true information.

A rumor is something that has not been confirmed as the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. It is usually started out of malice, to cause confusion and possibly distract people from learning the real truth about a matter, or as a joke to see how far it will get before people realize that they're being fooled. At any rate, I can't think of any rumor spread that ever resulted in anything positive. I can't even think of a rumor. But I do remember a really popular song called “Rumors” by the Timex Social Club.

There can be some amount of truth in some of the rumours that we hear but mostly rumours are just rumours. One should hear them but never take them seriously. I think that as long as the rumours are not harming someone and just are in the form of general gossip, we can't stop them. But sometimes these rumours can harm the reputation of innocent persons. As far as possible it's better to stay away from rumour mongering.
