How is your freelancing life?

Hello am Diana, I started this thread to know how other freelancers are faring, I know the whole challenges being faced by all freelancers, like you having to keep up with posting and having new ideas every time to follow the trends. How our about our new freelancers how are you all coping? Do you preface a regular job to this?

Freelancing has no struggles at all, depending on how well you handle it, freelancing is a job of discipline and focus, you have to develop your skills each day knowing that it is your passion and that others like money will follow. I responded to an article today were this person claimed that freelancing was boring and difficult and hectic, no freelancing is never meant to be so it should be something you enjoy doing always because it is quite simple. Freelancing has made me a better person who is much more dedicated to her work and education at the same time, in a day if I don't get what to do online I begin to search for it just to get something doing, passion should be your motivation in freelancing money will definitely come if you keep up the good work.

I published my first newspaper article in 2001. When my articles began to appear frequently after 2003 I began working as a hobbyist freelancer, by the time it was 2007, I was earning regular income from freelancing. Then I decided to become a full-time freelancer. In 2010, I started working online. It took me two years to receive payment for my online work. After writing for clients and various websites, I decided to launch my own websites in 2015. Currently, I am trying hard to promote my websites and make money for me.

Woah woah woah, you got quite a story for us, I am happy you had enough time to respond to my thread I appreciate a lot, you are doing just great.

I will give you a very heart warming advice, please never give up on freelancing and on your websites you are still developing, I know it can be so filled with a whole lot of challenges. But remember that you have indeed come a long way, I want you to keep up with it, I want to hear more successful stories and see you at the Zenith of it all.

I am earning quite well by writing for clients. But writing for clients can be tiring work and you have to sell your copyrights, I have sold many ebooks to the clients (believe me selling your works is not an easy decision, it breaks your heart to see other's name on the articles and book that you wrote). I decided to launch my website just because I would build a passive income and do not have to sell my works. I am not giving up easily.

Whether you work as a freelancer or are employed with a company, professional ,life can be very difficult. Being employed with a company guarantees you x amount every month, however, there is no such things in a freelancer life which can create a lot of financial problems. One of the grave problems in a freelancer life is managing the expenses.

You can say that again. Being a freelancer takes focus and dedication in order to succeed. Success doesn't come in days nor months, it comes in many years of laborious work. I've only been a freelancer for more than a year and I do think that success would come to me eventually.

It's great to hear that a fellow freelancer is doing good. I for myself is doing everything I can to raise my earnings before the year ends. I want to atleast hit my minimum annual online income target.

Right now I'm doing quite well. Although you always want to do better. When I first started out - it was okay but it improved when I figured out what I was good at - and how to offer those services on a broader spectrum.

Thanks for your response, I am really happy you are doing good too, come on we don't get to perfect the whole writing and freelancing skills.

I still do make mistakes too, some typo-errors and stuffs like that, sometimes we apply and we don't get accepted, another time we are doing all good but we get low rating I can relate to it all. I want you to keep going higher and higher, and trust me the more you don't give up the more you will do much better in it all, I wish you the best in it all.

I'm in the United States so a huge limiting factor is the price of self-employed health insurance. So while I can, at times, get very good freelance income--I have to keep a salaried position to maintain employer-sponsored health insurance. But other than that, it is going well. I am a little jealous of freelancers who can be on their spouse's health insurance.

Personally, I must confess that it haven't been an easy task with a lot of things I've going on with my life and having to combine it with my freelancing work, it's been one hell of an experience. But hey, I would still tell you that it's worth every second I spend online handling one task or another for my clients. Every second of the day is very precious to me and I wouldn't desire wasting it for anything useless because "Time is money".

I also feel like I am starting a bit late in the game and I have to admit it is so discouraging but the way I look at it there really is not much of a choice other than to press forward because the alternative is to work for someone else and I much prefer just doing this instead. Thankfully it doesn't seem to be all too impossible to catch up since these days a lot of sites and systems make it simple for anyone wanting to get into freelancing.

I also felt a bit intimidated, at first, "starting late in this game". I am 45 years old and a total newbie, and I have very little techie skills. I am doing everything based upon my extensive writing skills and experience. I agree with you that the learning curve can be pretty quick even if the profit from what you learn can be slow coming in at first. From what everyone says, on forums like this and elsewhere, the trick is to just stick it out and never give up. Slow and steady wins the race sometimes, and we are all hopefully learning more and more every day about our crafts and professions as we practice and push forward!

I started early. I was still in college when I started freelancing. I started freelancing after I published a book. I was 21. When I was 22, I published an article on the state owned daily newspaper. By the time I was 25, I was already earning more from freelancing than the teller in the bank. However, my freelancing career never properly took off. I still struggle to make a living by freelancing.

Freelancing will always be a struggle without any guarantees of anything, so that's something you have to take into consideration for the rest of your life if this is the path you want to walk. You can never know if you have work tomorrow, so while that allows for freedom it also requires that you are able to take the responsibility that comes with it.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

That's true. As a freelancer, sometimes you have a lot of work and you have to work 12 hours in a day, and sometimes you don't have any work and you are free for a week or more. Sometimes you get a high paying job and sometimes you have to work for pennies.
The most important thing for a freelancer is to develop a residual income.

I like your strong spirit, you are not really new to this game, I feel so intimidated at times too. I get to go depress with it sometimes and with my regrets of not starting early, got me into some situation especially when I have to pay bills and my points don't pile up the way I want.

Like you said there is not much of another option to it, especially me that dont like 9-5 I have to be on my keypad always to earn, maybe when I start another thread I will give a testimony of how freelancing helped me I feel it is worth it.

I get the whole thing about earnings online, and the emergency of family needs coupled with you fending for them, the whole world might be on your shoulders now but just make sure you don't give up. Giving up will not help you, if you really want to make it in this freelancing lifestyle you will have to be consistent with everything including your timing, I am happy you have a strong determination for freelancing keep it up.😘😘

That time is going to come, you just need to exercise that paitence, I am placing much emphasis on paitence because that's the key to online business success. Always work hard and keep up with the demands from your online clients, also show case your works and sell it on any of the clerks forums.

"I am placing much emphasis on paitence because that's the key to online business success."

I think that this is the hardest thing to come to terms with, especially when starting an online business, or any entrepreneurial endeavor for that matter. Without patience, one probably won't get anywhere. The fact is that success doesn't happen overnight, and it isn't a straight road from beginning to end. There will be twists and turns, setbacks and failures. If one doesn't have the patience to persevere through the turbulence, then there is no way it is ever going to work.

I'm pretty much in the same boat as you. I had certain hobbies/talents which I figured I could monetize at some point. I ended up moving to an area with a very low cost of living and some savings, which allowed me to experiment a bit with freelancing. While it hasn't been going extremely well by any means, it hasn't been awful either, so now I'm just at the point of trying to figure out how to improve and make a name for myself.

I have to be straight on the topic, starting out as a freelancer can be as tough as we can envisage it and those that are not able to hold on for such period will eventually give up. So, starting out is the toughest phase, but afterwards, things can get better and a freelancer can be able to understand the environment he/she is working on at the end.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Tronia
You are correct. I agree that usually, the starting phase of your freelancing "career" is usually the one that is the hardest because it's filled with different obstacles and struggles. Plus you are brand new and freelancing world can be very tough since it's so competitive.

The best advice from me is to stick there and don't give up. Work hard, put hours in and you will get rewarded.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

JoeMilford
I am glad, Tronia, that you have been able to make a career out of freelancing, and I think that this is the goal of most of us here, in any case, I totally understand that this business takes time to build, and so I am trying to stay determined and focused on moving forward and learning new things. Your advice to never give up, in such a competitive environment, is appreciated and well-taken--I think that this is essential advice, actually.

I am also a full-time freelancer. I did have a regular job briefly, however, I have been a freelancer my entire life. I began contributing on newspapers when I was still in college. My friends depended on their parents for fees and pocket change, however, I was earning my fees and pocket change. By the time I completed university, I was already earning a teacher's salary by freelancing. Therefore, I decided to continue with freelancing.

Sure, putting in the work is the best thing anyone that is willing to succeed as a freelancer should always do in order to get higher with what he/she wants to achieve. You can't expect things to go that smoothy from the onset as long as they are starting new.

"Plus you are brand new and freelancing world can be very tough since it's so competitive."

I think that this is one of the toughest hurdles to leap over. Wherever you're starting off, whether it's as a freelancer or getting started on a career, being fresh to any scene makes it hard to find work. The fact is that people want skilled workers, and everyone assumes that the new kid doesn't know his stuff. It takes a lot of patience and disappointment until you can get your foot in the door, establish a good portfolio, and start getting more consistent work.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Thanks for sharing your insight here with us Barida, online jobs are not bed of roses neither is it torn to our flesh because you get to feel that way especially when you are stressed out, sometimes you have to go through a whole lot of work before being accepted depending on their terms and conditions.

I will still say this, if I had know years ago that this is how it works, I would have been ahead now and kicking it strong.

I don't have any other job, I'm a full-time freelancer if you can call it that. All of my income basically comes from there. However, I don't only do online jobs but I also have some clients in the offline/real-life world where they contact me and ask for services such as writing, translating, transcribing, captioning and more.

How is my freelancing life? Never better. When I first began, it was a bit of a struggle and it took me a while to earn as much money as I wanted. Now that I have gotten some loyal customers and established a "reputation" it's easier and I really love it. I wouldn't change freelancing.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

It wasn't easy for someone like me as well. Connecting with offline clients and keeping things tight when it comes to working for them can go a long way in enabling that things get better for any freelancer willing to make ends meet.

Freelancing is also the only job I do now, because am getting my degree and I will be rounding up next, I use it to pass away time and also my job focus. When I graduate I will still be fully into freelancing, because I don't like regular jobs.

I feel that my freelancing life, if I am going to answer honestly, is way more work than what I am actually getting paid for. I know that we all have to start somewhere, and I am relatively new to this, but I do have to fight, at times, the urge to quit and give up because the time constraints for the actual cashflow are very imbalanced. I do have another job, and that is completely necessary, and I started freelancing because it was fun and it could supplement my income a bit, but I do wish I was figuring out how to make more money considering how much time I put into my online endeavors.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

vinaya
That's a common case. I have to work for 2-3 hours and the highest amount I can get for an article of 500 words is $10, normally it is $5. You have to work for 2-3 hours to make $5-$10. If you had a regular job, you will easily earn $5 per hour. As a freelancer you work more. Freelancing will not be rewarding until you get the right job. Recently, I signed a contract. The writing job will pay me $120. I can do it in two days. However, this kind of assignment is not always available.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Adesuwa08
But chill, I rather think that is best you freelance online than freelance for a company while they pay you wages, sometimes it really is more difficult working regular than online. The online policies is much more friendly than regular jobs, and it is regular jobs that demand more than online jobs, I am saying these out of experience.

I feel you earn more working online all you just have to do is put on much efforts, at least no one is making you do it because they want to pay you wages, but rather you do it at your own time and will no one is pushing you into any agreement. The reason why I feel you think this way in freelancing is because you are not paitence, and maybe it isn't your passion and what you enjoy doing, for your mindset to change from this perspective you have to embrace freelancing as a whole by these you will be able to see it not as a challenge but also one of the easiest way to make money.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

vinaya
If you search online, you will find the lowest paying job is writing job. There are many freelancing sites, however, it is quite impossible to find a good paying job. I worked on an article yesterday. I was paid $10 to write 1000 words. I received only $8 (the freelancing site cut the 20 percent commission). It took me three hours to write this article and by working three hours I only earned $8.

I guess that the true argument here is based upon how we weigh the quality of what we are willing to sacrifice, in terms of work everyday for another entity or institution, based upon what the compensation is for our sacrifice. Being one's own boss is obviously the preferred route to go, but we do not always have that option, so when we work for others, in our freelancing endeavors or otherwise, we are always deciding to agree to give time and energy which we will never get back again to a machine which is larger than us and maybe might not really care about our well-being at all.

If you want to make more money freelancing - you should start by broadening your list of services. Expanding your collection helps to improve cash flow. You can also bundle some services that have lots in common with one another. On the opposite end of the spectrum - if you have too many services for sale, try trimming that down to just the ones that are making you the most money. Then focus on improving and boosting those services with extras.

I think freelancing is just like any other job in the way that it will have its own advantages and disadvantages depending on where you land. Some may see it as or say that freelancing can get boring, but I would tell those people that many jobs working for big companies can also be hectic and boring as well. I think it just depends on how well you handle it or sometimes it might also depend on a bit of luck since you could land on the path that makes your work exciting and fulfilling, and even in that way I would say that it is also the same as traditional employment as well.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I quite agree with you on this, so many people have we freelancers all sorts of name especially lazy and jobless, we consider freelancing as boring and difficult to even do and earn money.

Though I never thought freelancing difficult for ones, it has really come with it's on challenges to me, there are times when my brain just get stuck and I become clueless of what to do, but I learn to over come that by just writing something down no matter what, thanks for sharing your own personal insight with us.

Baburra,
Good points here, if you ask me. We are always weighing the pros and cons of our employment options. I don't think freelancing is boring. I had a professor of mine once tell me that there is no such thing as a boring subject--there are only bored and boring writers. I think that, if we can find proper perspective on our projects, that we can always find a way to get interested in our subject matter.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Rumu
I also don't think freelancing is boring, in fact I know it's not. Am a writer who enjoys every bit of ink and paper, so how can I ever get bored penning down my thoughts, experiences and also that of others via freelancing?

However, freelancing isn't as easy as most people and sites portray it to be. To get successful with freelancing one has to exercise patience, do research, be good at the chosen choice of freelance work, put in a lot hard work and in some cases money too.

Rumu,

Writing, in general, isn't easy. I have spurts of inspiration, at odd times, but usually late at night or in the wee hours of the morning. I have a feeling this is my brain's attempt to deal with the fact that I am not dreaming or resting enough. In any case, freelancing and writing are both hard, but you could be doing a lot worse with your time, and both of them enrich your mind and can even enrich your bank account!

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Yes i agree with youthatwriting andother freelancing are both hard. However, if oneis able ro get it right, things begin to look easy im a wayandeventually the bank account begins to pileup.

@Rumu, freelancing idont need perfection, infact perfection is a myth, you just have to work hard pn improving your skills on writing.

Why I said freelancing is all about hard work and not perfection is because, in writing errors are always bound to come through in our works, but the more you write the more your skills get better not perfect..

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Not dreaming is perfectly normal. It means that what little amount of sleep you get, your mind is making the best use of that rest time by parking itself. Dreaming when you're asleep just means that your mind is awake while your body is resting.

I think that someone told me, or maybe I read somewhere, that REM, or intense dream sleep, is essential to personal mental and physical health. This could just be a theory, but I have heard this from more than one place, actually. Rapid Eye Movement, in the dream sequence, is related, supposedly, to how we process things through our sub-conscious, and I have read that it is totally required for proper human function.

Well, freelancing takes a lot of time from me. I used to have a regular 8 hours/day job, but I knew those were the only hours I would be working, with freelancing I can spend up to 10 hours in a row. So, yes that's consuming my whole days, and sometimes even nights. Freelancing takes a good effort, is kind of rewarding somehow, but you have to invest time.

Yeah, just like any job, you have to really work hard at the start of your freelancing career in order to make your way up and earn a lot more and be successful. You also have to not be choosy at first on taking jobs in your desired field since you have to build up your experience and portfolio so that bigger companies/sites will notice you.

Freelancing life is a great choice to have because you can manage your time according to your own preference that suits your interest and best knowledge. I really like the fact that it will make your life easier because you don't need anymore to travel to go to your work and just enjoy the convenience of being at home and taking care of your kids while doing freelancing job.

I would definitely be open to doing a project like that, and I am all for collaboration. I think that this would have the potential to be a great learning process, and if the "group" had a great brand name and could get some attention, i don't see why we could not build us some clientele and maybe repeat clients. It would take time and effort, like most things hat are successful, but I think this is an interesting, and good, idea.

Repeating clients and building a strong brand with a group of freelancers won't be a bad idea, so many opportunities spring up from such gatherings.

True. Repeat clients are the bread and butter of most freelancers.

Yes so true the repeating clients who come back time and time again are the best ones to get as it builds up trust and respect.

That's a great idea. A group of freelancers working as one. Collaboration is a good way to start a new business, it divides the risk and has a high success rate. I would be interested in joining a group like that.

I agree with you on that freelancers should help one another. As for me, it's my 7th month working full-time online and I have to admit it's really hard at first but when you get the hang of it, it's quite easy but you really need focus and determination to achieve what you want.

Right now I'm positive that I'll be successful in online work, my online income is steadily increasing this past few months, I'm currently working 12 sites and I'm earning $80 a month on my highest paying site and a mere $5 a month for my lowest paying site. My total earnings for the month of May 2018 is $220.25. that's a $22 improvement from my April total of $197.
I have high hopes for June since I got accepted yesterday in a top earning site so I'm looking at a 40 to 60 percent increase in earnings this June.

For the month of june, some of the sites I've been working in decreased my workload to half, if not for my new site I would've earned only half of what I'm earning. My total earnings for June was only $198 it's less than $24 than my May total of $220. Now I'm looking for other sites to work in.

I stopped my freelance writing job because it was too hassle and the rate is so low.
